Pompeii

I just wanted to share a little about our first time visit to Pompeii. We are on a north to south trek. I am happy with the route we chose going from Rome -Salerno (Pompeii) - Positano - Naples. We chose to use Salerno as a two night base so that we could spend a full day at Pompeii and ferry to Positano. The Salerno/Pompei train is 40 minutes, modern and air conditioned with hourly departures. The walk from Pompei station to the Anfiteatro entrance is easy enough if one has committed to spending hours at the site. There are lots of food and drink options along the way. There are also tour operators trying to sell unnecessary products. We bought our tickets in advance and went straight in with paper print out. We were asked to show ID for the kids. We had our passports with us. Once inside, be aware that some attractions have a separate entrance and exit such as the Palestra which may take one off the intended route or cause one to miss something completely. We made our way toward the Forum and Vettii and back to Porta Nocera where we ended our day walking through the necropoli. It was an incredible experience. We bought our return train ticket on Trenitalia app on our walk to the station. *No one checked our tickets in either direction.

The next morning, we had an easy walk to the Travelmar ferry and a beautiful view on our way to Positano. *Prebook and arrive early for a good seat on ferry.

Thank you for sharing your well-planned itinerary to Pompeii. Your tips on pre-booking tickets, being prepared with identification, and taking the convenient train from Salerno is valuable. Arriving early for the ferry to Positano is a smart move. Glad you had a wonderful time exploring Pompeii!

Thank you for your info and advice re Pompeii.

Is the Villa Regina (Boscoreale) worth visiting? If so do you need to cab it, or are there any vespas or bicycles that can be rented? It appears to be a 40 min walk from the Parco Archeologico di Pompeii.

Regarding "Once inside, be aware that some attractions have a separate entrance and exit such as the Palestra which may take one off the intended route" What is your recommendation on how we can make sure we stay on the intended route?

Thank you!

sulliam, I dont know much about the Villa Regina. I would think, take a cab. We did discuss that, when we return, we will stay in Pompei and try seeing more sights.

The only advice for staying on your route is to get a foldout map at entrance and preplan on google maps. Plan your food needs too.

Also has anyone traveled from Sorrento? And if so how did they get to Pompeii
Bus? Train? Trying to book in advance

The Pompeii site runs a shuttle between its offsite excavations. We didn't do Regina, but did go to Oplontis which was outstanding.

Our group of four visited Pompeii this week. I booked a tour with Gaetano Manfredi after reading the rave reviews here. Worth every penny. There are tour guides, and then there is Gaetano Manfredi. His love of Pompeii and passion for sharing its history is inspiring, his enthusiasm contagious. He made Pompeii come alive for us, and helped us to understand the history, daily life, and culture in ways we would not have been able to do on our own (and I doubt with any other guide). Gaetano is a thoughtful host with a sense of humor and fun. He also made everything easy and seamless for us, arranging a great driver and a wonderful Amalfi coast drive and lunch after the Pompeii tour. It was a perfect day we will never forget.
