Pompei Tours from Rome

We're planning a fall trip to Italy with the last four days, (Oct. 20 - 23), in Rome. Does anyone have recommendations for a tour of Pompei from Rome? We aren't locked in to being in Rom those days and could split time between Rome and Naples if that's a better option.

Is a day trip reasonable?, any companies you could recommend?, we'll have a car and could drive if a better option.

Thanks,

C & MA

We did this trip with The Roman Guy (aka The Tour Guy) and enjoyed it a lot: https://thetourguy.com/tours/rome/rome-to-pompeii-day-trip

Did we see everything in Pompeii? No. Pompeii is HUGE. But we saw and learned a lot in the 2 1/2-3 hours we were there, and we were very happy with our experience. Our guide came from a family of Pompeii guides. His father was a guide in Pompeii, and his uncle is still a guide in Pompeii. He was VERY knowledgeable.

If you can visit from Naples, you will have more time at Pompeii. But if Rome holds more interest for you (and there's a LOT to see in Rome), then a day trip from Rome is a good option.

If you only have 4 days allocated to Rome and haven't been there before, I would skip Pompeii. The ancient town of Ostia Antica is only 30 minutes from Rome via train, easier & has much of the splendor, though not the catastrophic impact, on a smaller area. Save yourself the incredible aggravation & hassle of a car, you don't need it or certainly want one in Rome, or south to Naples & on to Pompeii. It's not a great area for driving and trains are reliable & much easier.

A day trip to Pompeii from Rome is possible, but a very long day and if you have more time, choose to spend it either in Naples so you can eat some great food & visit the magnificent Archeological Museum (need to book in advance) or in Sorrento because it's a good jumping off point for Pompeii and some people like the more relaxed vibe. LOTS on the forum, use the search bar above in addition to the excellent ideas given above. Good luck.

Four days in Rome is barely enough time. Save Pompeii for a trip to Southern Italy where you’d visit Naples, Amalfi Coast and/or Sicily. We didn’t head south until our 8th trip to Italy. We loved Sicily and will return there. But back to the north next time.

Hi Chuck- my husband and I did a day trip from Rome to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in 2019 after our Best of Europe tour ended. We used Walks of Italy and we were happy with the experience. They provide comfortable transportation and an experienced guide. I also thought the cost was very reasonable. Have fun!
