Pompei stopover on the way to amalfi

Hello
We will be arriving in naples at noon on may 15th. We plan to visit pompei the same afternoon before proceeding to atrani where we are staying. I need some suggestions on how to go about it. Will it be better to take the circumvesuvania train to sorrento and bus from there or reach salerno by train from pompei and bus to atrani? Also what are approximate taxis fares for sorrento -amalfi and salerno -atrani?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions

Best: Circumvesuviana to Pompeii Scavi, check bags at gate, prearrange car service to Atrani. The train to Salerno (NOT the Circumvesuviana) uses a different exit from Pompeii than where you will check your bags, and is at least a 15-minute urban walk. You can consider taking Trenitalia to (modern) Pompeii, but then you'd have that walk or cab twice, via Salerno. All busses from Sorrento are very crowded, and require a change beyond Amalfi. Difficult problem.

Follow Tim's advice. That walk from the Trenitalia station in Pompeii-town to the southern gate of the ruins (Nocera?) is easily a half-mile, probably more, and while interesting--we did it--is simply not necessary time-wise. And the earlier you get to Pompeii the better. It could be quite crowded, even in May.
