Pompei Scavi to Pompei Station

I have been trying to wrap my brain around it for a couple of hours, and I am just...stumped.

I will be arriving from Rome one Tuesday morning. I have a tour planned, which picks up and returns to the Pompei Scavi station. From there, I will be going to lunch, and/or maybe dessert. I was planning my walking route, when it occurred to me that the restaurant was like 200 meters from the Pompei Station.

So, I thought...I'll just find a train from Scavi to Pompei, easy enough. But...when I plugged it into Google Maps, the options were like 30 minutes. I did eventually find a bus that was only 16 minutes, but it doesn't go to Pompei Station; it goes to a nearby station, but one that makes it a little more out of the way.

I then went to the Trenitalia site, and it gave a list of times, which showed the travel time being only 5 minutes between stations, which sounded pretty ideal. However, it wasn't via train. It was via a Pompei Link bus service, which was something that could not be purchased on the Trenitalia website. But...it gave me a place to start.

I looked up Pompei Link Bus Service, and I got a hit on the official Pompei website. Great. However, what I read wasn't all that helpful. It cites the travel time as 15 minutes....not the 5 minutes that Trenitalia said. But, I will overlook that for now. It talks about the fare, and mentions that the fare is added on to your train ticket. But...what if you don't have a train ticket? But, it does have a button to buy the tickets, so I click the button to buy tickets...

which takes me back to Trenitalia which once again tells me that I cannot purchase the Pompei Link bus fare on their site.

And we are back to where this all began. Is the answer essentially that there is no direct link between Pompei Scavi and Pompei?

I believe you can take the Circumvesuviana to Oplontis and then catch a different train to Pompeii. But then you may as well make the 20 minute walk instead.

Pompei Scavi and Pompei FS are on different lines. The former is on the local Circumvesuviana, the latter on the Trenitalia network. If you go on google maps and click on the stations you see the lines they serve, and you see that they are on different lines.

That means that there are no trains directly between them. You have to travel to somewhere the two lines meet, and transfer there between them. Not really practical.

The Pompei Link bus is a bus Trenitalia operates in connection with its own long distance trains. It exists so it can sell day trips to Pompei from Rome. This bus connects with the high speed trains at Napoli Afragola.
From this weekend on there is actually going to be a direct train Rome - Pompei even.

20 minutes walk should not be a big issue. You will do a lot more than that inside the archeological park. What you could do is after the tour walk back towards the amphitheatre, enjoying the sights a last time, and then exit the park via the other exit, that brings you directly to Pompei town. Will not make your walk shorter, but it will be more pleasant than walking along the main roads...

Taxi from the Pompeii Scavi entrance area to Pompei station. 5-10 min.

When people (for example those sleeping in Salerno) take Trenitalia to get to the ancient city of Pompeii Scavi ("excavation"), located in the modern city of Pompeii, they get off at the correct one of THREE Trenitalia stations that serve Pompeii city.

If they have luggage, they usually take a taxi to the Amfiteatro entrance of Pompeii the ancient city, and check the luggage while they visit. On a cooler day, you might walk. Google Maps is your friend.

Make sure you know the business hours of your restaurant, since it may close between lunch and dinner. Pompeii Scavi can be very sunny, hot, and dry. You will walk at least two miles on uneven Roman paving stones for your tour. You cannot re-enter on the same day ticket.
