Pompei or Herculeam?

We have three days in Naples and we're going to go visit either Pompeii or Herculeum. I was in Pompeii years ago, and I understand that Pompeii is much more massive, but Herculeum is better preserved. Would love to hear from folks have been to both.

Also, stopping in Paestum in the way to Sicily. Is it worth spending an extra night there or heading to Sapri for an afternoon in the beach.

They’re both great, honestly. I recommend visiting both if possible. I’ll also note that Herculaneum is often open late, so it’s entirely possible see both in a day with a solid break between them.

Was Palestine perhaps a typo?
I can see a town with that name in Italy, but it’s way up in NW Italy.

We visited Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day.
You just have to get an early start!

We've been to Pompeii and Herculaneum. With three days in Naples, you should be able to visit both without being rushed. Pompeii will take almost all day considering transit time and taking your time on site. Herculaneum should only take a half to three quarters of a day. We actually did both in one day by getting an early start from Naples.

We went to all three in Jan 23.

We did Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day. We booked a tour with Asko with an archeologist. It was excellent.

Herculaneum can easily be done in 2 hours. Pompeii, you are selling short with 3 hours, but may be enough in the heat if you want.

Paestum is about an hour on the train south of Salerno. Very different to the two above, however, it is magnificent. Greek ruins that are relatively quiet. Really good audio tour through a phone app. Afterwards we walked to the bufalo farm and had one of our best meals in Italy.

We took trains to all three from Salerno. Reach out if you want to know more..
