pompei in the morning capri in the afternoon?

Anyone tried visting Pompei in the morning and then Capri for the afternoon and early evening? The chair lift to Monte Solaro looks like the "thing" I'd like to do most on Capri. The ferry schedule shows the last ferry leaving at 19:00. I know this would probably be tight but I've been known to make quick trips in the past. Thanks Mike

Not doable. I say that because getting a ticket for the ferry, doesn't mean you'll get to board THAT ferry.

If you try to arrive just as the ferry is leaving, you probably will not get a ride on that one: At least not on the fast hydrofoil. Then you have to wait for the funicular, then wait for the bus. Then wait for the chair lift. The wait for the chair lift down, wait for the bus, wait for the funicular, and if you don't catch the last ferry there is usually an extra one, but only if people couldn't get on the officially scheduled last one at 1900.

Your better bet is going the other way. Capri in the morning, Pompeii in the afternoon, Pompeii open till 1930, but the Circumvesuviana runs till 2300 or so.

Where are you starting, and ending?

Pompeii is immense and just taking a few hours to browse is not worth the effort. If you go in the warmer months it is HOT and dry with few comfort amenities.

Buon viaggio,

Consider Herculaneum. It's like a bite-sized version of Pompeii and can be seen in a 2-3 hours. Smaller crowds, too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be based out of Sorrento. I had planned on "doing" Pompei and then Capri if possible one day and then Amalfi Coast another day. I like the Sorrento-Postiano-Capri idea. I will say I was thinking about Paestum at the end of the Amalfi day-- but that might be too much. Any reviews on Paestum? Mike

Paestum... Magnificent! These are not reconstructed Greek Temples. They were standing, pretty much as is, when rediscovered in the 18th Century: Early drawings confirm this.

Also rare Greek "Tomb of the Diver" paintings.

i thought the Hero site to be the most interesting. The Hero Tomb is small - you can't go in - but also fascinating since it wasn't opened till 1955 or so, they have all its innards at the Site Museum. Predates Roman occupation of the site. Unbelievable that it wasn't ever looted even though people knew where it was for over 2000 years. The Romans not only didn't loot it, they reburied it without even knowing what was in it? Its an odd and mysterious place.

What we did, and what was wrong with what we did. Both of us in our late 40's at the time and both of us are fit walkers.

We took the first bus from Sorrento to Amalfi- saw Duomo - another transfer bus to Salerno. Train to Paestum. Spent too much time at Paestum. Last Bus back to Salerno. Last Train to Pompeii, walked to Circumvesuvia train stop, then back on Last Train to Sorrento. This was a much longer day than we imagined it to be and very complicated making all the connections. You are not in an English speaking area here. It was a bit of a death march and skin of our teeth to meet the next transportation point. I would do it over in a different manner.

I would take the Circumvesuvia to Pompeii. Walk to the Main Line Train Station Scavi. Go directly to Paestum, then Bus to Salerno, and hop the ferries back to Sorrento with a stop at Amalfi.. to see the Duomo.

Its the bus ride from Sorrento to Salerno that eats up the day. And its very much a Mr. Toad's wild ride. Both of us were made dizzy from the Amalfi Coast bus ride.

Forget adding Pompeii. Just too much to see. There's something interesting around every corner. And.. it's BIG.

in 1999 I took a cruise that stopped in Naples. I pur, chased the ship's tour that had morning in Pompeii, lunch in Sorrento, afternoon in Capri. It is possible to do all that in one day as we did, but it probably requires advanced reservations to make certain that you get the hydrofoil to Capri when you want to take it. Since our entire visit was guided tour as a cruise ship excursion, we were able to do all. Yes, we had only two hours in Pompeii (but for us it was enough, as we returned to Pompeii last fall and spent more time).

Theoretically, it is possible. From a practical standpoint, you will end up not enjoying either place because you will be rushing around so much. Split them up into two days. Steve's advice is correct.

I have a similar question. I was hoping to do Pompei in the morning, and then take the bus along the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento to Positano. Then spend the rest of the afternoon and part of the following day in Positano before heading back to Rome. Is that too ambitious? I am traveling alone and lightly if that matters.
