I have looked at previous postings, but couldn't find anything very recent on this topic.
My question is: Does anyone have current ( 2025) info regarding private or small group guides for Pompei, the archeological site? I've been asked by a friend who will be in Pompei in November for recommendations for a guide. I thought that there are guides available for hire inside the Porta Marina entrance, but when we were there in July, we opted to do the visit on our own and didn't really pay attention to the guide situation on site, though we did see plenty of groups being led by guides once inside. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.
Hi Sonia,
The chances of you finding a guide on the spot are quite difficult, since most are booked out in advance. Also, guides do not usually hang out outside, waiting for prospective customers. I have used The Tour Guy on multiple occasions and they were fantastic. I am pretty sure they offer multiple options, so that is probably what I would do.
You might be able to book an audio guide directly from the monument itself if you prefer that route.
The official website states that, "Guided tours can be requested at the entrances to the site of Pompeii at Piazza Esedra and Porta Marina between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm." Sounds like they wouldn't have an issue picking up a guide at the site if they wanted to do that.
Antonio Somma, who is recommended in Rick’s Italy book is so great. His son picks you up at your hotel and drives you there. A nice two hour tour by Antonio. Couldn’t recommend them enough. http://www.tourspompeiiguide.com/
