Pompei Day Trip from Rome?

Will be first time in Rome early July on a family trip. Teenage kids want to visit Pompeii. Is a day trip from Rome to Pompeii doable?

If so, how early should we leave Rome?

What website should I go to to book a return fast train to Naples?

Should we plan for dinner in Pompeii (not sure if that is even possible), Naples or on return to Rome?

Any tips will be appreciated.

Doable but a very long day and it will be HOT! You’ll need to leave Rome as early as humanly possible. Easiest site to book at is www.trainline.eu which reps both train companies. Book only the Rome to Naples portion (and return). Between Naples and Pompeii Scavi you will take the Circumvesuviana, a local train that departs from the same station your high speed terrain arrives in but downstairs.

Rick Steves explains this day trip possibility very well in his Italy guidebook, which you should invest in or borrow from your library. He will answer questions you don’t even know you have. 😉

There is a town of Pompeii about a mile from the scavi so you could take a taxi there for a break. There are guided tours from Rome that include transportation and a guide but they’d are pretty costly.
