Hi all,
I would like to do a day trip to Pompei from Positano..any suggestions for the best way to do so? I will be travelling from Rome to Positano so someone mentioned about going straight to Pompei and touring there before heading on to Positano. Has anyone tried this? I am thinking on this but will most likely be hiring a driver to do the Naples to Positano drive. I don't know how long we will spend at Pompei..could be 2 hours, 4 hours who knows once we are there. I wouldn't want to be rushing through seeing Pompei trying to make it back to the main station to meet my driver. Has anyone one here tried this? Any suggestions on day tripping to Pompei? Would it be better to just go on a separate day? I will be in Positano for 4 days.
thanks peeps :)
Thanks Dick for the suggestion..(sorry people for the misspelling of Pompeii).. I know we can store our luggage at Napoli Centrale...is this easy to do or a pain in the butt? I didn't want to arrive in Positano too late as we have a limited amount of time there..thought hiring a driver would be the quickest (albeit most expensive) way to get there.. but I am open to suggestions. I hear it's about a 1-2 hour drive from Naples depending on the traffic. I just don't want to feel rushed up at Pompeii..like we're on a time schedule. The Circumvesuviana to Pompeii is another 30 min from Naples correct? So a train from Rome to Naples approx 1hr10min..store luggage( are there long line ups for this?)..30 min Circumvesuviana train..tour Pompeii 3 hours???? 30 min back to Naples..pick up luggage then 1 -2 hours to Positano. Does this seem doable? Also what about the trek to the top of Mt. Vesuvius..has anyone done this and would you suggest doing this or skipping it??
thanks a bunch :)
Hi Fabyan,
We are planning a similar trip in September and I understand you can store your luggage in Pompeii either at the train station or at Pompeii itself. The train station option sounds like it may be more secure and costs approximately 3 euro per bag.
Store your luggage at the Pompeii site entrance (it is free) so no need to backtrack to Naples. After your visit catch the Sorrento train, get off at Piano di Sorrento station (2 stops before Sorrento itself) and arrange to meet your driver there to go on to Positano because it will save a lot of time.

Guemar Travel is often rec for Positano visitors. Another Sorrento based company is Transferelax

PS - no worries about security when storing your luggage at the site. Hundreds of thousands have done so over the years and I have seen no reports about problems.
Thanks again all, and Thank you Linda..this seems like a good possible option. I will be looking into this for sure. :)
Or what about this..would anyone recommend say booking a tour through one of the above like companies to Pompeii (getting picked up at Napoli Centrale) and then having them drive us on to Positano after..not sure if this would be extremely costly or not or if it would even be an option. Part of me wants to take the easy way out and just hire tours/drivers and the other wants to experience taking the trains into various stations etc.. Also..does anyone recommend doing the hike up to Mt. Vesuvius? This seems really interesting to me..has anyone done this and what was your experience? I realize that everyone's opinion is relative, however I'm a horrible decision maker and am just looking for a little input. First time to Italy so I am trying to make the most of it :)
thanks
I would take the national train from Rome to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana train to Pompei and later Sorrento. Adding Mt. Vesuvius sounds like too much. A roundtrip bus excursion to Vesuvius from Pomei Scavi station, where you may have left your bags, takes about 3 hours.
