We'll be in rome and want to go to pompei and almalfi coast. Should we take train to pompei from rome and book tours there?

Diane, take the trains. Reserve one to Naples. The train to Pompeii is a dumpy dirty commuter train, but worth it. Don't need tour or tourphone. Walk among the ruins for hours, you'll need 4-8 hours there. We spent 4 hours there and couldn't see it all. Very hot but some great shade as the sun progressed across the sky. Worth every second spent.

Are you going to stay somewhere along the AC, or day trip from Rome? My answer woudl be different depending on your plans.

Diane, I would take the train to Naples, then the commuter train to Pompeii. Once there you can easily book a guide to take you around the ruins. You can do this if visiting for the day from Rome or if staying overnight on the AC. The trip is very easy to make yourself and the guides onsite are actually very good. Donna

You can also bus it to Pompeii from Rome easily if you need to save euros. Get your Pompeii entry tix at the sight.
