Pompei (city) trains and taxis

We will be in Italy the first half of September this year. From Rome, we plan to take a high speed train to Naples and spend the afternoon there. Then we'll take a train to Pompei and spend the night there at Hotel Forum (just outside the amphitheater entrance).

If we take the Circumvesuviana L4 from Naples we can get off at Pompei Santuario, or we could take the metropolitan train from Naples and get off at Pompei FS (the city station). The hotel said that both are about equidistant - maybe a 10-15 minute walk. Depending on the weather and our luggage we might not want to do the walk. Are there taxis from either train station that would take us to our hotel? I've read that taxi drivers don't appreciate having very short fares and this looks like it's only a few minutes away by car.

We're spending two nights in Pompei so we get the whole day there before taking a train to Florence via Salerno (from Pompei city station). On our way out we leave from Pompei FS so we might want a taxi from our hotel to the station, too.

All things being equal I would definitely take the standard train to FS and avoid the rickety Circumvesuviana with luggage and family. There is a taxi stand right outside the station, of course, and the station is busy so I would expect taxis to be there. If not there will be a posted number to call. Taxi apps have taken off in Italy and made taxis much easier for non-Italian speakers but I don't know about them working in Pompei. If there is one that works locally it will probably be listed as well.

I have done the walk to the Pompeii entrance and it is doable but probably longer than them you want to do with luggage. If you take a taxi and it's quick just tip the driver and I'm sure he'll forgive you.

If you want a taxi from the hotel just have them arrange it ahead of time or call one for you.

Enjoy Pompeii!

Thanks, Tod! I guess tips do solve a lot of problems. :)

And I was thinking that we'd like the nicer train, too!

I'm just chiming in to say that we loved the Forum Hotel when we stayed there in 2022. Perfect location, great breakfast, lovely rooms. The citrus grove is a great place for a drink after a long day of exploring.

Our best meal in Pompei was at Garum.

Thanks for the restaurant recommendation, @Estimated Prophet! We'll have to try that out.

Sounds like we made a good choice on hotel. One more worry checked off the list!
Regarding getting to and from the hotel, did you have any trouble? Did you take trains (which station?) and walk or did you take a taxi?

We used a car service to get from FCO to the Forum, and the owner of our B&B in Salerno picked us up at the hotel.

Assuming you get out early and coming the southern entrance you'll probably feel like you have Pompeii to yourself - for a while.

When you're there my advice is don't miss Insula dei Casti Amanti on Via dell’Abbondanza which is longest east/west street. There is an active archeological dig going on in that spot and they have essentially built a covered scaffolding shelter over the dig so you can walk above the restoration project and people as they work - well except Sundays when the people are off. We found it fascinating to see partially uncovered rooms and digs in progress. When you finish the walk puts you out at the snack bar, restroom area.

Also there was a good 3 part PBS documentary on the newest digs that I recommend. You can usually find it semi-legally on Youtube if you can't find it anywhere else. This adds great context to the dig at Insula dei Casti Amanti if that interests you.

Enjoy Pompeii,

Thanks for the advice! We're most likely going to hire a tour guide for a few hours in the morning then spend more time there in the afternoon on our own so anything they miss we can catch ourselves.

Ah, that sounds easy! For us, we're going to stick to the trains, I think.
