Pompei and Amalfi Coast in One Day from Salerno Port

We will be docking in Salerno for one day. Is it possible to see both Pompei and the Amalfi Coast in a one day shore excursion? I am concerned this may be doing to much since we will not have a lot of time in either due to travel time. If not possible which one would you choose?

We will be docking in Salerno for one day.

A full 24 hour day?

Does the cruise line offer an excursion to Pompeii? If not, that may be a sign trying to do so is not feasible?

Is Naples on the list of stops? Much easier to get to Pompeii from there.

In a word, no. The Amalfi coast can easily become one large traffic jam and streets shoulder to shoulder with tourists.
I agree seeing Pompeii out of Naples is easier, but if Salerno is your only choice, pick Pompeii. Italy has many beautiful coastal and hill towns. It isn’t necessary to go to these few. It only has one Pompeii.

Time of year and amount of time in port would be huge factors. Just getting to and from the Pompeii Archeological Park would be almost an hour each way by car, or 90 min by train. Figure 2-4 hours on-site for a superficial overview. There goes half to most of a day, providing you get a very early start. And don't discount the effects of sun, heat and crowds on your endurance. There are tours that advertise both Pompeii and the AC, but you have to realize that you will spend most of your time in transit from one place to the next and VERY little time anywhere. If you are determined to attempt it, take the one offered by the ship. It will be more expensive, but at least the ship will wait if you are late returning.

What month are you traveling? I might just pay up for the cruise excursion to Pompeii to ensure you get back to the ship on time. As others have mentioned, heat, time of year etc will make a big difference. Pompeii is tough walking, over large stones and uneven pavement. You will be tired by the end of a half day!

It only has one Pompeii. Man, so true! You will be sailing along the AC on your way to Salerno, and as someone else said, you will see many beautiful small villages.

You’ll have to pick one and I’d choose Pompeii. I think the payoff of visiting any coast town for a few hours is low, extremely low by comparison with Pompeii. One of the best parts of visiting the AC for me was seeing the coast from the water. I’d have to assume you’ll get to experience some of that from the cruise ship.

I won't weigh in on whether it's POSSIBLE to do both, it might be, but I think you would be checking items off a list, not really getting a worthwhile visit. So you should think about what sort of interests you have, and what type of experiences you enjoy.

Pick Pompeii if you are interested in ancient history, geography (the volcano), and want to think about what life (and death) was like all those years ago. You're not going to see anything else quite like it anywhere in the world (though Herculaneum is very similar, just much smaller).

Pick the Amalfi Coast if you prefer to see beautiful scenery, sit at a sidewalk cafe and enjoy watching the world go by, and shop for anything and everything with a lemon motif on it.

I enjoyed both very much (and got plenty of time at both), but as a history buff, I would pick Pompeii over Amalfi.

hey hey rockchalk1
no response from you at all about when is this trip. do you have rooms/hotels booked
you are planning too much on salerno cruise stop. that area is so so busy & crowded with many wanting the same as you & your gang, like many newcomers to the area.

check port, month 2026, scroll down to see how many ships are in port and how many thousands of cruisers will be in port that day, along with others on private tours. is this shipped docked or tendered and which berth and what are the hours/times in port?
my own opinion if pompeii is that important to you, take a ship excursion that gets you back to ship on time or hire a private taxi-tour and demand to be back before ship sails away. we have done that in several cruise ports and enjoyed them with no issues.
many people try to cut corners and costs for a once in a lifetime trip, up the budget cut back on something else.

Both as a shore excursion (meaning, you are off and back on the cruise ship on the same day)? I would say definitely not.

Personally, if I'd never been before, UNLESS it was high summer (July-August), I would choose Pompeii since it's closer to my interests, with the understanding that it means additional travel time and a very exhausting day with no real time to see Salerno. That would be a good option if you're feeling really energetic. If you prefer something a bit calmer, there's a lot to do in Salerno itself, including taking a relaxed boat tour of the Amalfi coast (if you're not sick of being on a boat!)
