Pocket wifi in italy

Me and my wife are going to italy next month and be there for around 8 days and then will head on to Switzerland and then France.

Do you guys have any idea where to grab maybe a pocket wifi? Or is it better to avail a sim card even though will be staying for only a few days? Thank you.

I’m going in June and have already reserved my pocket WiFi and have already reserved ours. They have options to pick up at any FedEx spot in Rome and a few other cities. Record say they even work on the Capri ferry!

I have never heard of a pocket wifi. Is it used in place of a SIM card for the purposes of having internet access on the road, and being able to call within the country you are if (say calling your hotel to let them know you will be arriving late)?

And where does one normally go to obtain them?

As in what company do you contact to reserve a pocket wifi?

I have not used them but from a previous post I had marked hippocketwifi.com. We are considering using them for this summer.

If you have a smart phone with mobile service in Italy, then you have a "pocket wifi" already. Just turn on the Hotspot feature of your phone. A separate "pocket wifi" device uses the same cellular technology (and possibly the same mobile provider your phone might roam onto) as your phone.

But does your phone offer service in Italy at all? Depending on your provider, it may not be cheaper or it may not be more expensive than renting some other device...plus it gives you the full use of your regular phone. I use a Dutch SIM card I bought a few years ago for travel in Italy and use my phone's WiFi hotspot feature as needed. Mine will work in Italy, Switzerland, and France. A SIM card bought in Italy may or may not work in Switzerland.
