Please review Venice and Dolomite Itinerary

My wife and I plan on traveling to Venice and the Dolomites in early September 2020. We are a little nervous about driving in Italy, so we are thinking about using public transportation for the trip. We plan on basing ourselves in Ortisel for the Dolomite part of our trip. We love hiking, especially in the Alps. I have a couple questions regarding our proposed itinerary that I am hoping someone can help us with. Are there enough hikes around the Ortisel area to keep us busy for 7 days? Are we spending enough time in Venice to see what there is to see? Thanks

Day 1 Flying to Venice from Chicago
Day 2 Arrive Marco Polo Airport. Train from Mestre train station to Verona to Bolzano. Spend night in Bolzano.
Day 3 to Day 9 – Val Gardena (Ortisel)
Day 10 to Day 12 – Venice
Day 13 – Flight back to Chicago

Why are you nervous about driving in Italy? It will be so easier if you rent a car. You will hardly be on the autostrada where locals drive fact
( although most are excellent drivers).
Ortisei is so beautiful! The front desk staff at Hotel Grones mapped out various hikes for us which were wonderful. We stayed four nights. Perhaps you might add a second location in the Dolomites?

Just seems like in Italy there are so many different ways to get tickets and fines when you are driving. Speed zones and Zona Traffico Limitation areas.
