My usual response in this situation: It's a shame to go to Sicily for just five nights. It means flights to and from, so not much more than four days there. And it makes your trip up to Sorrento longer than it would be from Rome.

The food in Sicily is especially interesting, so you won't want to cut your mealtimes short.

With 4-1/2 days on Sicily, maybe fly into and out of Catania and visit Siracusa-Taormina (with trip to Etna) or Siracusa (with Baroque towns)-Taormina. Either might allow time for a visit to the market in Catania if you can finesse the luggage situation.

Or fly in and out of Palermo and see that city and its sights plus Cefalu? Alternatively, rent a car for a day and you can hit Segesta after Palermo and--depending on the timing--perhaps use the car to see Monreale so you don't have to fool with a bus.

Lest there be any doubt, there are lots of ways to spend those five Sicilan nights on the mainland instead. Rome, as your first stop, needs more time.

That sounds exhausting!! By trying to see so many places you will be spending a lot of your time travelling.

If possible you should eliminate one or two of these locations. Although Sicily and Venice are magnificent you may want to consider saving them for your next visit and focus more time on the other cities this time.

A month seems like a long time, but when you break it down into all the different areas of Italy you want to visit, it suddenly seems awfully short! You'll find interesting history, art, people, and food just about anyplace in Italy, so no problem there. While your inclusion of Sicily means you will be spending extra time traveling to/from, I don't think 5 nights is unreasonable.

Clarify the May 29 location -- do you mean Vinci west of Florence, or Vicenza, or Vincio near Pistoia, or ... ?

Why so little time in Rome? I have been to Rome twice, spending about 12 days total there and still haven't seen everything that I want to see.

I would cut Sorrento and add those nights to Sicily so you can see more of the island. It has much more of what you are after than Sorrento does. Spend 5 nights on the western side and 5 on the eastern. Perhaps Trapani and Siracusa as bases. You will need a car.

Alternatively, drop Sicily and save it for another trip. Add nights to Rome (+2) and consider adding in Venice, notably missing from your itinerary.

I'm nearly certain that the May 29 destination is Venice.

I would find a way to add a day to Venice, Vince? 3 nights is really 2 days, not quite enough. We spent five nights there last April liked it much more than I expected. In fact we are headed back to Verona, seeing other areas like Mantua, this April and doing a day trip back to Venice. As for Rome, its not my favorite. I liked it but didn't love it and I figure I have to fly in or out of there when I return next time so I will return again and again.

Everyone thank you. Decided to wait on Sicily. Added two nights to Rome and Two nights to Venice.

I think you'll be pleased with your decision. If you're ready for a change when you're in Rome or Venice, there are good side-trips to take.

I would also suggest you change the path of your itinerary slightly. Though it only will save about 2 hrs travel time, it would alternate city and seaside locations.

Rome-Sorrento.

Sorrento-Florence.

Florence-CT.

CT-LaSpezia. Pick up car.

LaSpezia-Tuscany.

Tuscany-Venice. Drop car.

Venice-Milan.

Avoid Cinque Terre, go to Bolzano instead.

5 Terre has torrents of Hieronymus Bosch cruise ship swine.

The image offered by Rick's guidebooks will not occur if you go there now. He gives you a wonderful idea of what it was like 20 years ago.

It is really really a shame to go to Sicily for such a short time.
