Please help! Transportation to airport in Rome at 4 am??

Hi!

My husband and I have a 6:20 am flight from Rome back to the US and are staying right by the Spanish steps. At that time of day, what's the best way to get to the airport? We'd probably leave for airport around 4 am, or maybe even 3:30. Makes me nervous...

Kristina,
It's possible that someone on the boards knows of a better plan, but have you considered staying the night before in a hotel close to the airport? There are several, and it might give you considerable piece of mind the night before your horribly early flight. I've never done it in Rome, but I have stayed the night before near the airport in Paris. Sad not to have "our last night..." in Rome, but infinitely less stressful.

Alternatively, there are private car services that advertise 24/7 rates, so that might be a good choice. You might contact your hotel's concierge and ask if he/she can make a suggestion. You are surely not the first guest to ask!

Best wishes!
Debbie

I ask the receptionist to reserve a taxi the night before, never had a problem.

US airline? Terminal 5? when I flew back in 2012, the terminal didn't even open 'til 0500 ( I had 0700 flight). We also had hotel arrange taxi. No issues.

The early flight issue out of Rome is so common that the hotels in Rome long ago worked out solutions with the taxi companies to get you there as early as you want. Spend your last night in Rome. Have a nice dinner. Your hotel can arrange to have a cab waiting for you at 4:00am (or earlier if you want). It's done dozens of times every morning. It's 30-35 minutes to the airport in the early hours. You can get to the airport early but ticket counters and operations don't really begin to ramp up until 5:00am. Taxi fare to the airport is set by law in Rome. I believe it's 48Euro right now plus 1Euro per bag. My wife and daughter were also staying near the Spanish Steps on a recent trip and had the same situation out of FCO. Their flight was at 6:45am. All worked well.

Reserve a taxi or hire a car service - we usually hire a car service just because in my mind it's a more reliable form of transportation. If you are staying at a hotel they can easily arrange this for you.

We use a private driver. He never fails to show up and knows exactly what time you need to leave. PM me if you want his contact info. 55 euro one way, and you can sleep peacefully.

Lets be clear. There is no flight from Rome to the US at 6:20am. Way to early. It has to be a domestic flight connecting you to your flight home which is why Terminal 5 (Terminal for international flights back to the US) is not open till 5 or so. With a 6.20 flight you will use Terminal 3. Checkin will be quick and easy so plan on being there by 5 to 5:15. Which means you can leave via taxi around 4:30. You hotel will set it up and most likely you will have a night clerk at the hotel that can confirm the taxi arrangement if necessary. It is still an early wake up. Or if really adventuresome, storage your luggage at the hotel from the day before, enjoy Rome nightlife, grab the last bus around 2am and catnap in the airport lounge till 5 or so. You will have lots of company.

I also highly endorse and suggest Romecabs.com. We've used them twice and both times they were extremely reliable. We used them this past September for a transfer at 4 am from our hotel to FCO and our driver was there early waiting in the lobby of our hotel. The cost is very close to that of a regular taxi and they're professional and use cars that are very clean, comfortable and air conditioned. You can book your reservation on-line ahead of time but you don't pay until the day of service. Have a great trip.

Since most flights that get you from Rome to the US in one day do leave very early, this is a common issue for our tour groups that end in Rome. We always ask the hotels to reserve taxis the day before and that has been reliable. I also recall the airport check-in desks not opening before 5:00 a.m.
