Hoping for advice on two specifics yet - Less busy/congested city to pick up rental car (north of Venice?) or is Piazzale Roma fairly easy to drive out of? Also is Montepulciano the best place to settle in for our drives around Tuscany and Umbria? Thank you all!!

It is a lot more moving and less time in each place than I would want, but I do not see any unrealistic parts.

With all due respect, can you flesh this out a bit....as in 'have you been to Italy before'? If not, Rome could use more time.
Are you familiar with all the ZTL rules for the places you will be driving? I consider this more a road trip than a tour of Italy, but being out and about can lead to lovely opportunities for serendipity.

As others have pointed out, there's quite a bit of time being spent moving between destinations. Your itinerary has 5 days where you'll spend 4-8 hours in transit, and that doesn't include packing and unpacking time, so almost a third of your days are allocated to simply changing locations. If you're OK with that, then your itinerary does work. If that sounds like too much time lost to changing locations, then you might consider either replacing Amalfi Coast (longest move) with a destination between Varenna and Montepulciano (second longest move) or redistributing the 3 Amalfi Coast days among the other 4 destinations.

Drop Amalfi Coast and save it for a future trip. You will be too much in a rush trying to fit all these destinations on the limited days that you have.

Do: 19 Days Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Venice

Day 2 & 3 - Venice

Day 4 - Pick up car at airport and drive to Selma Val Gardena (base)

Day 5 & 6 - Dolomites Region

Day 7 - Drive to Varenna (base)

Day 8, 9, & 10 - Lakes Region

Day 11 - Drive to Montepulciano (base)

Day 12, 13, & 14 - Tuscany Region (Return Rental Car in Tuscany Sienna or Florence and take train to Rome)

Day 15, 16, 17 & 18 - Rome

Day 19 - Fly home

My second visit to Rome and husband's first, so, thank you all for the quick responses. Amalfi is a must, so basically we just need to add on some days to our stops in the north, lakes, and Tuscany regions. I think our time in the cities is sufficient, as husband was baptised a Catholic and I expect he will be awestruck by the Vatican, he is not into churches and museums as much as natural beauty. We are hoping to avoid any ZTLs and looking for an easy access (less congested) place to a rental car office out of Venice, or is it easier to get train out of Venice and rent car in first major rail stop north? Thanks for the advice!! I will try to repost revisions, so excited!!!!

Get train out of Venice first and rent car at first major rail stop North. You can add days to visit the Almafi coast. You need at least 4 days in Rome though in the end of the trip.

What a, I missing? Others are mentioning the Amalfi Coast but in this 30 day itinerary I do not see the AC mentioned. 🤔

Are you going in the summer? I think you would relish one more day in the Dolomites than so many at “the Lakes”. Staying in the town of Lake Como not the best. Head to mid lake if you are staying at Lago di Como. We liked Varenna very much.

I agree Rome could use more time, but if this is in summer (June thru Sept) it is pretty darn hot. I certainly would not add any more stops to this trip. And good for you for not moving every two or three nights!

We did close to the same trip in two weeks. I think your plan looks good and is a combination of big city and small towns. You have time to chill and relax. Don't feel like you have to be sightseeing all day every day and take time to enjoy the slower pace of Italy. When you are in Montepluciano, take a day or two to do nothing, except maybe stare at the vineyards and countryside. You will need a "vacation" from your vacation by then.

Yay!!!! I finally got it right? We also replaced our hotel in Como to stay in the lakes region with one in Varenna. All I have to do now is get my flights and get the car rental pick up and return locations nailed down.....Thanks all...Grazie!!

We used Montapulciano as our base to get around Tuscany last year and it worked out well. It is a fairly easy drive to other Tuscan towns like Siena/San Gimigagno/Volterra, Cortona/Perugia. Orvieto plus the towns around Monapulciano. We liked Montapulciano but especially liked the little towns of Monticchielo and San Quirico d'Orcia.
I would recommend where we stayed - Villa Nottola which was a few miles north of Montapulciano. The rooms were nice, the service was good and the price was reasonable. What was especially nice was their on-site restaurant. The food was tremendous and it allowed us not to have to drive back into a town in the dark for dinner. I know that at least some of their rooms have full kitchens.
