I'll be in Milan Sat Sept 6. I'm only staying 2 full days in Milano and leave to US on Sept 9 around 10:00 am from Melpansa. The two main places that I want to see is the Doumo and the Last Supper fresco for which I already have a reservation.
Can anyone suggest a place to stay near the Centre
on a $200-$240 / nite budget
Ciao, Fernando,
I'd recommend staying near Piazza Duomo. Centrale Stazzione can be a little scary, I suppose, but if you take a taxi direct to your hotel (the Metro is right there, too, and very quick, just four stops from Centrale to Piazza Duomo, something like 8 minutes...but sounds like you're concerned about the potential for theives, and so a taxi would be quick and give you peace of mind, too) there shouldn't be a problem. Then when you awake the next day, you'll have the Duomo, the Piazza, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II right at your doorstep for a wonderful day of exploring. As for The Last Supper, I'm presuming you've already booked your time for that way in advance? If not, highly unlikely you'd get an appointment--they fill up so quickly. You can check on line, however, by visiting http://www.cenacolovinciano.it/html/eng/home.htm Also, if you haven't picked up Steves' Italy 2008, I highly recommend it for lodging/transport/safety advice. Buon Viaggio!
Thank you John,
Yes I do have reservations for the Last Supper viewing. I read RS guide and used the phone since the website says that there are no spaces left. But as RS guide says..the website does not reflect when people cancel. So I called and they gave me a confirmation number.
I keep looking in TripAdvisor and I'm getting very confused. Please help.
Yes, I was planning to stay 2 nites near the Centre, then on Sept 8 I will stay in a hotel in Melpansa to avoid the 30 mile trip in the morning.

Thanks for the List for Melpansa.
Milano Centre has been the hardest for me to pick. I called Galileo (near the Duome) and he quotes me 180 euro per nite but Venere says 140. I thougth by dealing directly it would be better since they have to pay a fee to the booking agent.
One thing I noticed is that a lot of times the internet booking says "no rooms available" but if I send an email they respond with availability.
Fernando,
Check out the hotel Star...it's about 2 blocks from the Duomo, 2 blocks from La Scala...the price is about 140 Euro and it is highly rated on tripadvisor. WE stayed there last year and we were very favorably impressed with the rooms, the service and the breakfast.

Thank you Bill, I did make the reservation in Hotel Star. It was a 180 euros per nite..expensive, but all of them are like that. I looked at the website and I liked the pictures and reviews. The only other choice that I had was Galileo but since they quoted me 180 over the phone and 140 on venere I decided not to take it. I read that sometimes hotels loose the reservations (specially if they can make more money when there are conventions) and I believe September is the month when conventions are in Milan.
Anyway thanks for your suggestion I hope I will like it as much as you did.
Hi Fernando,
We are staying in Milan in September for two nights (Sept 22-23),and will be staying at Hotel Lancaster for 144 euros for a double room. The reviews on Trip Advisor were quite good except the hotel is about 20 minutes out of the city centre but in a nice location. That's 20 minutes walking time.
There is also a Malpensa Shuttle bus from
the train station Cordorna I believe, but I am not sure of the schedule. Our flight to New York/San Francisco leaves at 10:00 am and we are hoping to take the shuttle at 6:00 am or thereabouts for the airport. If anyone has any information I would be grateful. Happy travels.
