Planning trip to Italy in May .... best way to airfare?

Hello my partner and I are planning a two week plus vacation to Italy next April or May. We want to fly in and out of Florence I think. We are most interested in the small towns, Tuscany, Umbria, Cinque Terre (although its crowded I don't think we can miss it), Florence and ?. We like to be active, hiking and some biking hopefully.

What is the best way to get flights? Should we fly in Florence and out of Milan?

What are the most fun hiking and biking day trips?

We are newly retired and want to plan a special trip, the first of many! Reading your guidebooks and watching your videos. But need help!
Thanks, Liz

Milan and Rome are the major gateways, and probably your only choices if looking at intercontinental flights. I would look at something like this, with a few small town options for Umbria and Tuscany.

Rome - 3N
Umbria (Spello) - 3N
Tuscany (Siena/Florence) - 4N
Cinque Terre (Monterosso) - 3N
Milan - 1N

With a couple more days you could include Lake Como (Varenna) before your departure from Milan.

Use google flights as a starting point it is pretty accurate as far as airline prices and always book directly with the airline unless there is a major price difference.

Like the person before me there is no direct flight from the USA to Florence.

So you might start in Rome to get to the region of Umbria and its small hilltop towns of Orvieto Perugia, and Assissi. I am going there next week to ring in the New Year at
Umbria Winter Jazz Music Festival http://www.umbriajazz.com/

From Perugia you can use Florence as a base to explore the region Tuscany and some of its smaller towns Siena, Pisa etc.. From Florence you can take the train to base yourself in Monterosso al Mare the last town on the Cinque Terre closest to Milan, the point where you may want to fly out of.

I did the hike from Monterosso al mare to Vernazza in the evening in about an hour and a half when all the tourists were gone and got some great sunset scenery e.g. http://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/new-mediterranean-vacations-vernazza-italy-article.

Another thing there is a bike path in Umbria Assisi to Spoleto with some pretty damn good scenery

You just have to do the research. Look at youtube.

Liz: You don't say where you're flying from. With that info, we can certainly help you on the flight.
Florence is a very small airport, and to get there you'll have ot fly from another European gateway city. The Pisa Airport is a larger airport, and it's 1 hour west of Florence by train.
On our last trip to Florence, we flew through London Gatwick and took EasyJet into Pisa Airport. On the previous flight, we flew into Gatwick and took a connection flight into Rome FCO.
Biking in Tuscany? You have not seen the rolling hills there. We saw more from behind the wheel of a rental car.

FYI, just saw bargain flights SFO->Rome for about $650 on KLM.

You might also consider flying into or out of Pisa. I was planning to fly home from Florence last summer, but Kayak brought up the option when I allowed my search to include nearby airports. It saved me a couple hundred dollars and is an easy train ride from Florence if you plan to begin or end your trip there. Happy Travels!
