We arrive at Marco Polo Int'l in the afternoon (1:40 PM). If we take the Alilaguna Blu-Line Water Bus we will arrive in Venice around 3:30 PM. After settling into our apartment it will be a bit late in the day. The sunset for the day of our arrival is approximately 7:12 PM. Does anyone have any suggestions for planning our time that first day? We are in Venice for 3 nights total.
Hi Elle, I would take a walk to San Marco square and generally around the city, as many of the tourists will be gone for the day and many of the locals will be out. Early morning and evening are the most relaxed times to explore Venice. Venezians eat late and many like to take a stroll and eat gelato. I highly recommend the nice restaurant, Rosa Rossa, on a side street not too far from Sans Marco. It is a small, very charming restaurant with great food (and frequented by Johnny Depp when he is in town). The prices are quite reasonable. For a light meal, try a local chicati bar (that offers French bread with many delicious toppings to choose from plus a nice glass of wine). Some offer the option to eat outside, which is quite wonderful. Sit on a dock, watch the boats. Maybe take in a concert at a church. There is also lovely music on the Square. During the day, I highly recommend going up in the bell tower (campanille), but check the schedule for when the bells ring and make a reservation to avoid lines). The view is magnificent! The thing is, after arriving on the plane and taking the boat, you may be exhausted! On our first day, we just wanted to sleep. So, if you do explore, maybe take it easy the first night. Happy travels! Ruth
Take a vaporetto ride along the Grand Canalpurchase a pass for the number of days you're there. Lovely at night. You can download Rick's audio tour. Stop for a drink near the Rialto Bridge or St. Mark's Square. Better to have dinner where the locals go.
It will take you a while to get settled in the apartment. Not sure where you are staying but I would plan for a nice dinner. Maybe down near the Rialto bridge. Lots of resturants nad nice area to see on your first day.
What neighborhood is your apartment in? That could help with suggestions.
