We are spending time in Tuscany, then 2 nights in Orvieto and then on the Amalfi coast (Praiano). Have planned to drop our car in Sorrento, but want to avoid driving in Rome. Any thoughts? Thanks

The route on Google Maps bypasses Rome entirely.

How much time are you allowing for the drive? A night or two? Do you need to drive, drop off the car, then get to Praiano by mid-afternoon the same day?

Just stay on the A1 and bypass the GRA.

You don't go through Rome, not even through the GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare = Grand Circular Beltway).
The A1 totally bypasses the Rome metro area to the east.
