Planning a trip to Italy in mid-January

Hello,

I am just beginning to plan a trip for my boyfriend and I to visit Italy this January. We will likely be flying from Boston to Rome and staying about 9 days. We realize winter will be in full swing in the northern part of Italy and would like to concentrate our visit to areas in the south where we hope it will be a little milder temperature-wise! We don't have a specific agenda, we're just two 30-somethings looking to experience the food, culture, museums, etc. that Italy has to offer. If anyone has suggestions for places we shouldn't miss during our trip, please let me know.

Thank you!

Culture, museums, food, 9 days, January: Rome and Florence should be near the top of your list. January is a time to go to places that offer a lot to do indoors and Rome and Florence do.

With 9 days, I'd fly into Roma and out of Venice, including 3 nights in Rome, 3 nights in the amazing city of Florence, and 3 nights in Venice...or at least 2 nights Venice, and a 4th night in either Florence or Roma (my vote is for Florence!). While it will be between 40 and 50 degrees Fht and maybe a little drizzle now and then in Florence and Venice, compared to Boston or Chicago (where we're from...we visited these places last Christmas)...it was like early spring! Buon viaggo.
