Planning a trip o the Amalfi oast

I am planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast checking off one from my bucket list and need some help! We are flying into Rome and will spend a few days there and then thought we would take the train down. So first question where is the best place to take the train to and then how do we arrive in the Amalfi Coast? This is a special trip for us so we would love to stay at one of the beautiful hotels on the coast and treat ourselves so where should we stay? I know there are some beautiful hotels and we want to splurge a little so where should we stay? I also would love to hire a driver for a few days and would love recommendations for that and also suggestions on day trips and places to check out. We also are foodies so would love recommendations on places to eat. We are booked to take this trip in May 2017. Thanks for any help and any other suggestions or ideas which I may of missed.

Train to Sorrecto or Naples. It is difficult to get to Amalfi Coast towns and you take a bus or drive. I would hire a driver to get from Naples or Sorrento to your hotel.

Le Sirenuse in Positano is fantastic and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello as well.

Your two options are to head to Naples, then work your way to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast, or avoid Naples by heading to Salerno and head to the coast by boat, car, or bus. I would discourage getting a car, too hectic, if you are splurging a bit, get a private driver to get you to your hotel. No recommendations for specific hotels, many choose to stay in Sorrento (not on the Amalfi Coast, over on Naples Bay, but handy for the coast and Pompeii.

I would recommend Positano as the place to stay.
There are may luxurious options there.

We stayed at and can highly recommend Eden Roc but Le Sirenuse is a higher end option if you can afford it I am sure is even lovelier.
I did not see much use for a car or a driver once you get there, best use of a private driver would be getting to and from. If you have time Pompeii is a great day trip option, once you reach the coast at your wonderful hotel you may not want to leave though.
Capri is an easier day trip , a ferry leaves from Positano to Capri so no driver needed to get there.
Local buses quickly reach the other towns along the coast and for me seem just as easy to see the other towns this way rather than a private driver. Amalfi, Ravello and Sorrento would be 3 towns to check out if your base is Positano. I would spend my money other ways and/or use the driver to get you from the hotel at check out directly to the airport which would be a nice luxury.

For a luxurious foodie treat, get yourselves to Pasticceria Sal de Riso in Minori on the Amalfi Coast. Desserts, coffee and gelato from an excellent pastry chef. Minori is a small town but some ferries stop there, it is a nice way to spend an afternoon.

This is how we transferred from Rome to Positano. Take the fast train from Rome to Salerno. Catch the ferry out of Salerno and travel down the picturesque Amalfi Coast, it's a fabulous way to enter the village. There is plenty of room, so no need to reserve a ticket. Plus, if the seas are not conducive to ferries, then it won't run. Our backup plan was to take a bus from Salerno to Positano.
