Planning a day trip to Rome

What's the fastest route from Florence Italy to Rome . I would like to see the Colosseum first and than make my way to Vatican . Which train do I take?

Have those tickets as soon as you know your date. They could come very expensive when bought on the travelling day itself. Alternatively you can book a train at the competing national railway company: www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en

There's a metro station at the Termini train station. You can take the metro (line B) to the Colosseum. The metro also goes to the Vatican. Take the B metro back to Termini and change to line A. There's a little walking involved but the metro will be faster than any buses or even taxis.

I don't know if you will be completely satisfied with what you will (and won't) see on a day trip trying to combine those two attractions.
When I was last in Rome (first time visiting) in 2015, we did those on two separate days. Each took up better than a 1/2 day. And we were only traveling from the Pantheon, not a 1 1/2 hour train trip away in Florence.

I thought then that each was best suited to visiting first thing in the morning, and that's still my thought as I plan my next trip to Rome.

before you get on the train - walk across the road from the Colosseum to Victor Emmanuel Monument, there is an elevator that goes to the top of the monument and there are 360 degrees views of Rome. It is a beautiful view and a great way to orient yourself to where things are in Rome. You can spend as much time as you want on the top.
