Planning a a month trip arriving in Rome, then Sicily and up Almafi coast

I need suggestions on the best and least expensive way to plan the following. My sister and I, both seniors (68 & 70). We want to arrive in Rome, spend a few days, then proceed to Sicily. I have looked into a ferry from the port outside Rome to Palermo, or would the train be a better option? We want to spend a few days in Palermo, then drive up the Almafi coast to possibly Sorrento and rent a place for a week or more. We were on a Perillo tour in 2006 which was wonderful, but think we can do this on our own.

Pat, having taken the ferry from Naples to Catania, I can recommend that mode of transport. Obviously it is more expensive that flying, but overnight accommodation is part of the deal. It is a long trip by train, with a ferry crossing at Messina (which would be interesting being on the train in the ferry). Sicily is worth more than a few days in Palermo. Allow yourself side trips at least. Any anyway, you are only late middle age, but travelling young. Enjoy.
