Plane tickets to Italy

I just checked for tickets to Italy in May, flying to Florence and home from Venice. Per person is 947.00 that's a good deal. What is so magical about May? I'm trying to go in September but the tickets seem so much more expensive in September then they do in May.

We've been three times so far. First time September. The last two times May. We prefer May. Flowers are blooming and everything is green. September can still be really hot and crowded.

Why is May better? Longer Days! Venice has about 15 hours of daylight in May. In September it is about 12. I almost always take European vacations in May. It is still not peak travel season so airfares are lower. The days are pretty long and the weather is usually quite comfortable.

September fares may come down as you get closer to September. Comparing Sept to May at this time is not equal. And some travelers prefer Sept to May because the weather is potentially better in Sept.

Airfares have been going up every month until Summer, when they're approximately twice the fares of late March. While airfares may be slightly less expensive in September, high jet fuel prices and carrier consolidation appear to have made changes in airlines' modus operandi. Airlines are adding and subtracting flights so the planes of the future will all be flying full. If a flight from a certain city is unprofitable, it'll be quickly cancelled. Don't look for flights to be much less expensive unless fuel prices drop dramatically. And, we all know that's not probable.
