Flying to Rome FCO and connecting there to Bari. When we check in at New York, does our baggage go to Bari, or do we have to pick it up and go through customs in Rome? Only one hour between flights on the SAME airline company.
Pretty sure you have to pick it up, walk it through customs, and drop it back off past customs. However I don't think you will have to go through security again (tho not as sure about this). However, my experience with Rome customs is that it is very perfunctory and you will likely get through quickly.
When we fly from Boston to London Heathrow and then on to Leeds, our luggage is checked in Boston through to Leeds. All on BA. Similar country situation, but not the same countries. I would think it would be the same, but I can't say for sure. We did have to go thru security again at a different location, even though we did not change terminals.
When you check in at the airline counter the agent will put a tag on your luggage which indicates exactly where it will be checked to. We just flew Atlanta -> Vienna -> Moscow. We did NOT have to pick up our bags in Vienna and recheck.
Contrary to some of the previous postings, your luggage will be checked through to Bari since it is on the same ticket so you will do customs in Bari - that is nothing - walk through the green door (Nothing To Declare) after you have found your checked luggage.
The bigger problem is that you will have to go through immigrations (passport control) in Rome. With an hour that can be very risky. Our last experience a year ago May on a Saturday morning was two and half hours to clear immigrations. They were allowing people with short connections to jump the line. Then you have to go through security again for the domestic flight to Bari. See if you can jump the line. I would have a fall back position just in case your plane is a little late or the lines are too long.
If you fly with Alitalia or a combination of Delta/Alitalia (they are partners), you won't see your luggage until you get to Bari. You will go through passport control in Rome, then proceed to the domestic terminal T1 to catch your flight to BRI. You will go also through security again. One hour is a short layover, however Alitalia has 6 daily flights to BRI, therefore if you miss one, they'll put you on the next.
Thanks to All for your answers. I think Roberto resolved my query.
