Places to visit in Florence & Venice

My family including my self 5 of us will be visiting Florence & Venice next month. Will be arriving in Florence on 11th May at 3pm and leaving on 13th May at 11.25am to Venice arriving 1.30pm and leaving at 7.50pm the same day. I would like to know the places I must visit during that period of time. Thanks.

The places you must visit are the ones that interest you the most. None of us can tell you what you should visit as we don't know you. You should get a few guide books and read them to determine what is most important to you. There must be some reason you chose those cities, start with that and then build your itinerary. The only way to make a great vacation is to do the research. I could make you a list of sites but if you don't like the same things I like then it's a waste of both our time. Donna

You don't even have to buy books anymore. For the short period you will be in these cities, just do some internet searches starting with the city's tourists office.

Researching travel on the internet can be like drinking from a firehose. Getting a good guidebook or two will save you tons of time instead. The RS books in particular are great for first-time travelers.

You ask a good question since you have so little time in Venice. First, Florence. You will want to orient yourselves around two major squares first, the Piazza Signora, where you'll see the most important Renaissance buildings around which the Florentines built their civilization. There are many places to sit there. Second is the Duomo (cathedral) area, where you'll take in the exteriors and go inside the Baptistry across from the Duomo. The other main sight you'll be sure to visit is the bridge over the Arno river, with its shops. In addition, if anyone in your group wants to buy leather goods, head for the street stalls around San Lorenzo. and finally, you will want to see the David by Michelangelo, in the Accademia. In Venice, with so little time, you will take a vaporetto up or down the grand canal, and go to San Marco square. If there is time, go inside San Marco basilica and if you have even more time, try to tour the Doge's Palace next door. You can ticket both the Doge's Palace and the Accademia in Florence online.

Are you arriving and leaving from the same place in Venice? That is, are you arriving at the Santa Lucia train station and leaving from same on a 7.50 pm train? Or do you have a 7.50 flight? If a flight, you must allow sufficient time to get to the airport and go through all the check-in and security procedures. You also have to figure out what to do with your luggage. If you are coming and going from Santa Lucia, then you can check your bags at the station. You will still have to allow sufficient time to get back to the station to reclaim your luggage and get to your departure train.
