Places to stay in Rome?

My husband and I will be in Rome for four days during the first half of September, and we have no idea where to stay... We would probably fall under the moderate price range (or a little cheaper). Just looking for recommendations...

We are staying at Argentina Residenza under recommendation on this forum. Price seems quite reasonable for Rome. It is termed a "boutique hotel" - relatively small and well located. We're leaving in a few days.

First, do a search on this site, there is probably a hundred or more recommendations. Second, we always stay in the Termini area for convenience and it is more reasonable. Try Aberdeen, Sonya, Contilia. All three stars. We prefer Sonya just slightly over the Aberdeen because we think the breakfast is a bit better but the Aberdeen is a touch, small touch, nicer. Contilia is our backup when the other two are full or one night passing through Rome.

We really enjoyed staying at the Hotel Trastevere in the Trastevere. The area was quiet, nice hotel, and across the river from everything. Much more "Roman" than the touristy areas.

Hi Kendra--My husband and I are fans of the Campo dei Fiori area, and we have stayed at the Smeraldo, a Rick Steves' recommended hotel, which we really liked, mostly because of its fabulous location. We've also stayed at a really nice (and much more expensive)hotel closer to Termini near Santa Maria Maggiore, and I don't like that area nearly as much as Campo dei Fiori. I like the atmosphere around the campo because it matches the romantic ideas I had about Rome before I went. Plus I love being able to walk everywhere.

My sisters and I stayed at the Hotel Nardizzi in Rome last September. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The location was great, on a quiet street, but just a few blocks (easy walking distance) to the bus. There was also a McDonalds on the corner that served as a great landmark. :-)

Kendra, Family and I just returned from Italy (18 days) yesterday. I whole-heartedly recommend the Hotel Alimandi Tunisi. We were there for a total of 5 nights. It is immaculate, wonderfully air-conditioned, has a small fitness room and internet access and is just down the steps from the entrance to the Vatican Museum, which leaves it a bit out of the "noise", but with daytime access to a taxi stand. It is also reasonably priced and they do offer the handy 5% discount for cash. The staff at this family-run *** hotel could not be more accomodating. The rooftop terrace is an oasis, not just for the included breakfast (and their entertaining chef, Francesco), but this spot is open to guests 24x7. You have full access to beverage service, which is by Italy standards, a real deal. They will pick you up at the airport for a (nominal)fee and bring you back for FREE. It is also around the corner from the famous Old Bridge Gelato stand (always crowded) and just across the street from an equally as good gelato bar with no lines. Within two blocks you will find a non-touristy main street with many not-so-touristy restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. I could go on & on; I cannot say enough good things about this place!

Wherever you stay, you want to be within a short walk of a metro stop or at least a city bus stop. Enjoy your stay.

Hotel Teatro Pace, right off Piaza Navona. Amazing romantic vacations with tons of small cafes and no cars. Amazing breakfast in bed included. We really loved it there!

We also stayed at the Best Western Hotel Canada and might fall within your budget. It is a great location, just a short walk from Termini and a metro (underground) stop literally right around the corner. Clean, large rooms and a great breakfast. Air-conditioning was wonderful after touring Rome in the brutal July heat. Prior to our trip, I had read a few things about people who felt like the area of this hotel was seedy, etc. but I didn't feel this at all and felt completely safe walking around at night.

No hotel suggestions as i do not go until Oct.

A/C is likely impt if you go before October -- probably not so bad afteward (unless a heat wave hits).

After doing a lot of looking, I think if you are only in Rome for 2-3 days and are going in and out by train, stay near Termini (within 6 blocks) so you can check in right off of train and out just before leaving (there is a bag check if need be). But if over 3 days, then better to be "near the tourist areas as less commuting each am and pm.

I will be at Target Inn - a mid price place at 150 euro/night. I had a couple of others in mind, but no vacancy.

Thank you everyone who replied! We are going with friends, and we looked into many of the hotel recommendations, and eventually did a search on this website and found Hotel Smeraldo that gave a Rick Steves discount (130 Eur) and was closer to all of the sights than the termini station, which was important to our friends.

I wrote down some other recommendations for the next time we are in Rome.

We stayed at the Hotel Smeraldo and really enjoyed it! The location, as mentioned is great--it's wonderful walking through the Campo de' Fiori market each morning. There is a nice cafe right across the street (small alley, really) and a great bakery nearby! Have a great trip!

Hello!

From what I heard, first it might be better to avoid the International or American hotel chains, they might be nice but it lessens the "Italian experience."

I suggest that you stay in authentic Italian hotel like the Hotel Dei Mellini or the

Hotel Santa Maria Di Paolo Vetere & C. Sas. They are near major roads.

If that doesn't fit the price range, you can also opt for Hostels, actually since they are more economical, you might have extra bucks to use for more exploring. Just googling them there are lots.

Finally, my favorite would be a holiday apartment. Its basically an apartment you can rent for your stay. You can cook, invite friends over, and basically feel at home. There are some luxury apartments and there are nice "authentic" italian ones. Here's a site I use alot for searching apartments

I hope this helps!

While I can't make a recommendation for Hotel Smeralda since I haven't stayed there, it may also be a good choice for because of it's location near the Campo di' Fiori. That area is beautiful day and night and is perfectly centered in the city for easy walking for sightseeing or taking the bus from the Largo Argentina. Don't miss the morning produce market in Piazza Campo di' Fiore and enjoy a morning cup of delicious cappuccino with Italians who are getting ready for their work day at Bar Farnese. Kind of a cool, authentic experience to be part of their daily routine. Cheap, too! Say Buon Giorno to Angelo!

My husband and I stayed in a convent a few blocks from Vatican City. The location was wonderful: three blocks from the metro and walking distance to VC as well as the Pantheon. It was 75 Euros per night. The only two negatives were the 10:30 curfew and the fact that the nuns spoke VERY little english. However, we plan to stay there next time...if you're interested in the details, let me know.

I can highly recommend Hotel Smeraldo! Great location, (small) rooftop garden, optional breakfast (7 Euros if you take it - we never did, since there's so much around the hotel), air conditioning, nice (small) rooms, helpful staff, the list goes on ...

Hi Kendra,

We stayed at the Beehive in the Termini area. It was very convenient to the train station and they had a restaurant there too which was yummy.

They have apartments too but I don't have experience with that.

As a poster below mentioned - I would recommend the "Hotel Canada" a Best Western Hotel. We stayed there twice, each time for at least 4 nights each. It is on the east side of Rome, I believe, a little farther from the Airport and Cruise Lines, etc. But that adds to the moderate cost. BUT it is a 'very short walk to the subway stop, which is only one stop from the Termini. You can get off at the Termini and get a train,or bus or change subways. A great hotel, lovely, large rooms and spacious bathrooms. Classic European styling with Old World Charm. The is a bar in the lobby that also serves espresso. Many places to eat within walking distance from pizza to pannini to full, wonderful dinners! We will be going back in September 2009 and are really looking forward to it.
