My family and I are traveling to Europe in July and we were thinking of staying in Milan but several people have mentioned that it would be better to stay somewhere else.
We are looking for hostels or inexpensive hotels in Lake Como area and Bellagio (spelling ?). Any ideas would be appreciated.

We stayed in Verenna which is a short train ride or drive from Milan.Steves has a number of places in his book.Villa Cipressi is on the water and very nice.www.hotelvillacipressi.it. We stayed one night and because they had no rooms the next moved to Ermo Gaudio(www.ermogaudio.it)the next.It is located high above the water in a great setting.Both places were very nice.Bellagio is a short boat ride away.best regards. jack

Varenna is the best. We stayed in 2004 in Hotel Montecodeno-- actually not IN the hoyel but in an apartment leased by them. It is a small, untouristy place with great walks, gorgeous flowers and many amenities
