places to stay between varenna and venice

We are travelling to Italy in September. We are staying in Varenna for 3 nights then heading to Venice. We have 2 nights that we have to book between the two places. It has been mentioned that if we are on Lake Como for 3 nights that we may want to try a city between Lake Como and Venice. We have been looking at Bergamo and Vincenza. Are there any other suggestions? We like to visit local cafes, try local cuisine and walk through villages to see the local sights? We will have travelled in Switzerland prior to Italy.

I saw your thread before you moved it - I agree with previous poster that Verona would be a fine option. It's a very attractive town, lovely walks and views. I visited 2 beautiful churches (San Zeno and Sant' Anastasia), a wonderful Renaissance garden, the Giardino Giusti, the Piazza Bra, featuring a Roman amphitheater that hosts opera performances in the summer, and the Castelvecchio museum.

I spent several nights in Padua. There's quite a lot to see in that city, and a side-trip to Vicenza (much smaller) is easily managed. I haven't been to Verona yet.

Verona, Padua and Vicenza are all good options and all are along the train line from Milan to Venice. After 3 nights in quiet Varenna, I would enjoy the livelier cities of Verona or Padua. Vicenza feels small (even though it really isn't), but maybe that's what you prefer. I can't speak to Bergamo as I haven't yet been there.

Bergamo is very picturesque, but I suspect travel times to the obvious day-trip destinations will be longer. I suggest visiting the Deutsche Bahn website to check on that.

Verona, Bassano de Grappa, Vicenza, Padua are all interesting historic cities. Bassano is a favourite of ours with it's Alpine feel though not far away.
