Places to sleep near Rome's Termini Station

Good day to everyone,
I have never been to Rome. I am trying to reserve a place to sleep for my husband and myself in April. The beehive hostel is booked and a few convents have not returned my emails. We are looking for no more that 60 -70 Euros per night. I know this is asking for alot. If anyone has stayed somewhere they enjoyed for this amount, please let me know. I emailed the Day and Night Hostel today, the few reviews I found were positive. My main question is, that I have heard that the train station area is a shady place to stay. The address is: Night and Day Hostel- Via Napoleone III, Rome 38, Italy . It is north west of the Termini Station. Thanks in advance for your help.

If I recall, the area near the Termini isn't very desirable. I'm sure there are clean, safe places near the Termini Station but I would suggest taking advice from someone who actually stayed in the particular hotel, hostel, or convent they recommend. Good luck.

The area north of Termini is OK but unremarkable. That's where you're likely to find budget alternatives. I can't list a specific place for you at that price but that's the neighborhood where they'll be.

I stayed in Rome recently at the "Welcome Home Residences" hotel (address: Via Giovanni Amendola 7). We booked through Hotels.com. The average nightly price right now looks to be about 100 USD which is in the 60-70EUR range (Currently 70EUR = 102.35 USD). The hotel is literally two blocks from Termini Station and therefore the metro. You'll be getting a nice hotel room with complementary breakfast, air conditioning (key in the summer), and the service at the hotel was great with 24hour reception and attendants that spoke very good English and had great suggestions for dinner. Do yourself a favor and consider some hotels as once you have two people the prices become pretty similar as hostels and this way you'll have a pleasant night's sleep.

I might add that at least while I was there the area around Termini station to the West where we stayed wasn't too bad. The area certainly has its trash and graffiti (but this seemed to be fairly common throughout Rome), but we had no problems whatsoever. Just keep alert and you'll be fine. Have a great trip!

AAARGH, I am taking a RS family tour with my 12 yr old and it starts in Rome and the hotel they use is only two blocks for train station, I am not happy to hear it is a dodgy area, this is a FAMILY tour and you would think the area they put you in would be family freindly... I am not pleased.

My hotel is the Hotel Selene on Via Del Viminale, does anyone know it, I have also booked the night before the tour starts , and we are arriving at 8 pm and I had planned on walking to hotel, I guess a taxi might be better if area is yucky.

Hotel Selene is a perfectly safe area of Rome. It's just off of Via Nazionale - one of the main shopping streets of Rome. Come on, Rick wouldn't take his tour to dodgy area. Have some faith!

Pat,
We stayed at Hotel Selene in June 06 while on RS 14 day tour. The rooms are just lovely. They were the largest, with the nicest bathrooms, on the whole tour. We were on the 4th floor and they had an elevator and air conditioning. We didn't consider the area to be dodgy...just a short walk to Termini station where we figured out which bus to take to Pantheon and Trevi Fountain area. Don't be alarmed at the Selene. We have good memories of our stay there. If you like, send me a message and I will send you pics of our room.

I've stayed at hotels near the train station (Termini) four times: north, west and south of the station. I've walked alone in the area at all times day and night up to midnight. I never felt unsafe. There are many people about and the area is well-lit. Proximity to the train station and Metro make the area more desirable than some other areas IMO.

pat: chill...the whole area is fine;now if you are taking your 12 yr old out on the town at 2 am, that's a different story.

The Beehive is not even a 5 minute walk from Termini. RS recommended hotel. I stayed there in July in the dorm room, and the place was really nice.

Thanks Sharon, I believe you and you are right why would Ricks tours go in seedy areas, I guess I took one previous post a little too seriously.

We stayed at a hotel recommended by Rick and it was across from the Opera House. forgot the name, though. but it was very safe. It was the second time I had stayed close to the termini. No problems whatsoever.

We've stayed right near Termini twice now, and it's no more dangerous than any other part of Rome at night.
In fact, there are so many people around, I'd say it was safer!!!
I won't recommend our last hotel, it was clean, and lovely helpful staff; but very rundown and the shower didn't work!
The first time: we were at Hotel Kennedy, 2 blocks from the station, but it is about E150 a night now. It's very nice.

R Perry,

You indicated that you have tried to book The Beehive Hostel, so I'm assuming you don't mind staying in a Hostel if the price is right.

You might have a look at Alessandro Palace Hostel. It's only about a 5-7 minute walk from Termini, and I believe they have double rooms for about the price you specified. I was in a 4-bed Dorm and found the rooms to be clean and modern. Although many of the guests were younger, there seemed to be a good range of ages when I was there (I'm over 50!). The "typical" breakfast was included in the cost of the room (Buns, some kind of juice, coffee, etc.).

Good luck and happy travels!

I stayed at Hotel Sonya http://www.hotelsonya.it/en/location.htm across from the Opera house and it was beautiful. It is recommended by RS. From what the web site says it looks like the lowest rate for 2 in April is 124 Euros but I belive there is a 5% discount for cash. I was only there one night before my RS tour started. There is a tiny Gelato shop where they sell sandwiches and sodas. That was my first meal in Rome. If you go by there, say Hi to Luigi for me. lol. It is only about a block and a half west of the Termini.

For the tour we stayed at Hotel Aberdeen. http://www.travel.it/roma/aberdeen/ I also stayed there the night after the tour. I originally was booked at Bubbles which is run by Beehive and changed them when the tour guide told me that since I was alone it might be better if I stayed to the west of the station instead of to the east. At both of the hotels I stayed I was out until 2am and felt safe. I don't think I would have felt so staying east of Termini.
