We will be ending our tour in Lago d’orta and thinking of traveling to Bologna and using that town as base to go to Parma and other areas. Is this a good town to use as a home base to travel to other places for day trips
We have 5 days and then will fly out of Milan
Any recommendations for sites tours etc much appreciated.

I did this tour in spring this year, it is great btw, and I went into Milan for 6 nights and loved it. Bologna is nice too and you can use it for a jump off point but Milan was special.
Bologna is fine for a base
You’ll probably need to stay in Milan night before departure so consider at least 1 night there
I assume you are on Villages tour which i believe includes Ravenna? If not don’t miss

I’ve stayed in Parma and Bologna. I definitely liked Parma more as it is smaller, less gritty, has a number of interesting sites, is the home of parmigiano Reggiano and prosciutto de Parma, is on the rail line with links to Bologna and Ravenna. If you want to travel a bit further, Turin is fantastic!
