Places to eat Venice

I left my RS Venice guide at home and now am here. Got a day before we start our RS tour so need a few places to eat. Any suggestions? Thx in advance. Steve

Meander from the prime tourist ladden portions of Venice.

Osteria Alla Frasca and Osteria Da Pampo

Neither in the guidebook. Found by wandering.

Take the vaporetto to the San Stae stop, then wander straight down the street, even though it looks dull and empty. There's a great place about halfway down the block, on the right - Osteria Mocenigo; carry on a bit further, turn left, cross a little bridge, and there's another, bigger place, Il Muro San Stae.

Or instead of turning left at the end of the block, turn right and wander off further from the canal, and find some delightful little places tucked in on small squares brimming with locals.

Enthusiastic seconds to the recommendations for Da Alvise and Osteria Mocenigo.

Both were highlights of our late May 2023 time in Venice.

Saw some unflattering comments online regarding Ristorante Da Alvise and was a little apprehensive, but found that our experience there was the polar opposite. They could not have been more lovely, and the food was delicious.

Have seen multiple raves here about Osteria Mocenigo, and agree wholeheartedly. Ours was a lunch experience, and it the place was packed with local workers and other groups speaking Italian - several of whom seemed familiar to the proprietors. It was easy to see why those who live or work in Venice would eat there.

Enjoy Italy!!

kbj, we were staying in a hotel in San Stae last year. We had noticed the Osteria, but hadn't tried it yet. One day at lunch we stepped in and I asked, in passable Italian, if they had a table for two. "Do you have a reservation?" he asked. "No, " I answered, and turned to leave. "Sit down!" he roared, and we had a marvelous lunch. We did make reservations for dinner for another day. It was possibly even better that time, but I don't know how that could be.

We'll be in Venice next year, and I'm already dreaming about the wonderful food there.

We had several meals at Osteria Vini da Pinto near the Rialto Market. It’s not in the middle of everything so the area was relatively quiet at night. Service was excellent as well the food. We had fish, risottos, soup and delicious desserts in the two or three meals we ate there. In fact our last night we ate somewhere else and wished we had gone back to try something else.
Also if you are staying at the RS hotel Pensione Guerrero it is right around the corner. We found it after arriving the night before our tour and it was drizzling so I wanted something close.

here are a few.

a real gem is a small restaurant in the center of San Marco call Il Ridotto (means "reduced"). One of the best meals I've ever had and I've been there on previous trips. Family run and the wife takes orders and no-one speaks a lot of English but it all works out. Kind of pricey however. You can book from their website but they require a credit card in the event you don't show up, or cancel by the day before.

Another is La Bitta, a nice walk across the Academia Bridge from San Marco. Distinctive in that the menu is mostly meat v the fish served in most Venetian restaurants. Crowded usually so reserve (only by phone).

One other is Algiubagiò on the water at Fondamente Nove and a very picturesque walk from San Marco. On an outside deck overlooking the water and really surprising good food but pricey. Again, you will need to give them your credit card in advance.

Good luck

Another one across the Academia Bridge is La Rivista. (On your right as you walk away from the Center.) We had excellent sea bream and tagliatelle with duck ragu. We just stopped by there for a drink while we were waiting to meet our guide, but the food coming out of the kitchen was so enticing we just had to order. We told the server we didn't have much time, and she made sure we got our meals quickly, even convincing Stan he had time for desert!

@Jane -

Sounds about right! The folks at Osteria Mocenigo were full of personality.

I think your reviews earlier this year mentioning Osteria Mocenigo were among those that made me seek it out for our last lunch in Venice.

Thanks for the tip - we loved it!

kbj, You're welcome! Always glad to help. We found the hotel (Al Ponte Mocenigo) from posts on this Forum, so we're delighted to be able to pay it forward.
