Places in Venice for 4 people

Would love to hear your recommendations for a family of 4 (couple w/2 college age kids) in Venice for 2-3 nights in the moderate price range. Thanks!

They do not have rooms available during our visit. They do have a small apartment up the street. The pictures of it do not look that great... has anyone stayed in this apartment?

We are staying in an apartment (www.vrbo.com/222660) for four at 150 euros a night. It is in the Castello area near St. Mark's. We found that an apartment was more economical than two hotel rooms, most of which sound very tiny. Hope that helps!

Try apartments. We have had good luck with www.veniceapartments.org

there are other agencies as well. Many have a 3 night minimum, but you should be staying at least three nights anyway.

We called Hotel d'Art. They offered us a two-bedroom apartment that wasn't part of the hotel but owned by them. The place wasn't fancy but worked well for us and was cheaper than a lot of other places we stayed. We were five people (couple and three kids)

Please be more specific in terms of dollars or euro because moderate is a nebulous term and means different things to different people. Keep one thing in mind...everything in Venice is more expensive.

A suggestion would be for you to scan venere.com or tripadvisor.com to find properties in your price range. The sights will include maps and client reviews. I have found venere.com to be extremely reliable.

Two summers ago we stayed at Hotel Abazzia in the Cannereggio section of Venice and we were very satisfied. It is a former Carmelite Monastery and now a 3 star hotel. It is near the St. Lucia train station and a vaporetto stop on a very quiet calle (alley). I prefer to stay about 4 blocks away from the train stations because I do not want to hump my luggage on subways, taxis, or metros.

Buon viaggio,

RB

Hotel Messner is quite cheap and has mediocre rooms for 4 people. However, I highly recommend you look at B&B Venezia in the St Elena part of Venice Island. You can probably book 2 of their double rooms for the price of 1 quad room - and you'll actually be living with a Venetian Family in a most beautiful residential section of Venice where the local families live and play and stroll through the park. I've been to Venice more times than I care to count right now, but I enjoyed St Elena immensely!

We booked two doubles at B&B Venezia in S. Elena (as Tim suggested) in June for 70Euro per room. The owner is very responsive and friendly. They also have a quad room, but I'm not sure of the rate. I'm really looking forward to our stay as the B&B and that area of Venice look quite picturesque.

Thanks everyone! I am looking into many of these options.

I am considering renting an apartment. My daughter and I could arrive a day early from our trip to Paris and then meet my husband and other daughter the next day who would be coming from the US. This would give us the required 3 days for an apartment.

Can anyone recommend areas I should be looking in? If you have apartment suggestions would love to hear them. Mid range for us would be around $200-$250 night for an apartment and $300 for hotel w/breakfast.

I just stayed at Ca' Foscolo for the second time, and loved it! This time it was just two of us, but the first time was perfectly comfortable with 5 adults. An apartment/hotel, right between Rialto and San Marco. Perfect. :)

The lst time we were in Venice, we stayed at this spot and really enjoyed it. There is a yard in the back with grass and trees for lounging about.

But there are lots of spots .

We have stayed in San Polo very near Campo San Polo, in Castello a few times usually around Campo Santa Maria Formosa and in Dorsoduro near the Accademia. All have been great locations with different things to enjoy.

Thanks Sharla and Ron - both look like real possibilities. Ron, the apartment you listed is booked but have you used that agency for others and did you like them?

Yes, we have had good luck with them. When we have used them they always responded very quickly to emails, etc.

they have an office near Piazzala Roma where you transact business and pick up and drop off keys.

They fun thing they do is give a photo log along with the map, so you see what it looks like when you need to turn etc.

We (family of 4--2boys) also enjoyed our stay at Pensione Guerrato but since that is full...

On previous trips to Venice we have stayed at apartments that Hotel Campiello rents just a few steps from the hotel and a few minutes walk from San Marco off the Riva. Have stayed in apt. Dodesona and Bucintoro. Have 1 bedroom with pullout sofa in living rm. and very nice bathrooms.

Last summer I almost rented an apt. through Pensione Guerrato but they did not have any pictures to look at online(I always like to see pics) so I booked through Campiello instead. One day while in Venice we were headed to Rialto mkt. and walked by the Guerrato pensione and visited with people who were staying at the apt. and they said it was very nice with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The price they quoted me last summer for the apt. for 6 nights, July 7 through 12 was 230 euros/night/5 people.

Came very close to renting through www.truly-venice.com They have some very nice apts. and were very quick to answer my e-mails. It was Daniela that I was corresponding with. I was looking at apt. Angelo Michele or apt. Carmini. They have lots of pictures online of their apartments and reviews.

You could try www.venicerentals.com. They did not have anything available for us last summer.

Several years ago my brother used www.veniceapts.org and had good luck with it.

A few others you could check out: viewsonvenice.com; venre.com; veniceapartment.com; venice-rentals.com; apartments-in-venice.eu; greatrentals.com; homeaway.com; and the previously mentioned vrbo.com.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Ron, you have good taste - that apartment is booked, too! I am a little confused about which areas are good for rental apartments as there are a few others that would work for us. Any areas I should NOT look at?

My favorite areas are around Campo Santa Maria Formosa. The area in Dorsoduro from Chieasa San Sebastiano to Santa Maria della Salute. The area around Campo San Polo and the Frari and Campo Santa Margherita.

But honestly most of Venice is very nice, all the sestiere have different feels. Some are closer or farther way from the most frequented attractions. Farther away means fewer tourists, longer travel times and usually quieter areas and generally slightly cheaper rates. But there are churches everywhere and bells ring early.;-)

The only caveat would be to stay in Venice proper, which means not on Guideca or the Lido.

I'm a little confused - On the veniceapartments.org main page it lists areas but I'm having trouble matching them up.

Check out Ca' Angeli. They have a suite on the top floor with 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom that we really enjoyed. I addition to the 3 bedrooms, there is a sitting area.

They all look nice.

For me, Pisani is a bit farther out from stuff.

Da Ponte is well located in San Polo. there are shops and restaurants close by. It is on the third floor and is located on what during the daytime would be a fairly busy pedestrian walkway, but not so much at night when the daytrippers leave.

Contarini is very convenient to Piazza San Marco but removed enough to be not too crazy with people.

Foscari is also in an interesting spot. Slightly off the main tourist path. But not too far out. Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a lovely church.

Thank you Ron! This is VERY helpful and gives me a much better idea of where we should be looking.

Thanks also to everyone else - you are a wealth of information!

Janet - Thanks for all of the options, I am looking into those, too. I see you are also from the Minneapolis area. I am loving the early spring here!

We need to have a Rick Steves Minnesotan section on this board!

We just stayed at Casa Rezzonico in the Dorsudoro neighborhood. 15 min to San Marco and Realto. Super quiet. Casarezzonico.it They only have 7 rooms, provide nice breakfast and we paid 135E per night in March. Wonderful hosts who were born in Venice. We adored them. They have a lovely garden in the back. We walked across a bridge to Campo San Margherita for great Cichetti an pastries. Campo San Barnaba just up towards the Grand Canal had lovely restaurants and gelato. There's a produce boat right up from the inn.

We had a triple room, but there would have been plenty of room for at least 2 more beds! Talk to Matteo or Mattia! You won't be sorry. I can send you pictures if you like.

We adored this area and really did not like the areas closer to San Marco and Realto. Stores were much more expensive and it was more crowded there.

Would be nice to have an apartment, though if you wanted to hit the market in the morning and cook (like I wanted to!)
