Place which has 4 centuries in one road / one view

We went to the Rome Venice class today and the instructor out there showed a picture of a place in Rome which had many buildings - one was a 4th century apartment, one was a 16th century building, one was a 12th century building and another was a 20th century building. I do not remember where in Rome is this view? Can anybody tell me? Thanks

Sowmya Have you thought of asking the instructor who may well know? There are, undoubtedly, dozens of views such as that in Rome, so I am at a loss to know which one you are speaking of without seeing it to get a clue.

This is the 2nd question where you've posted information overheard in a class and then asked us to tell you where it is.
Do you not take notes in class?

I thought the same thing, but I don't see the point in making an issue of it............... Maybe it is riddle to test the knowledge of the "experts"?

Hi, Yes I did take notes in class... but the class had LOTS of information and there is only so much I can write... Also there could be 100 places in Rome like that.. Atleast I asked only 2 questions and not 20...Why don;t you tell a few if you know. I am asking as I do not know it. I will try to ask the instructor - thanks for that suggestion... It will be great if somebody else can tell me what place that is or if there are many places like that, please list a few that you liked.. Thanks

That combination of buildings could be so many places in Rome. Can you provide some additional description of the buildings? Maybe that would give us the clues needed to answer your question.

Hi Frank, He showed a clip and the instructor said that this shows how many layers of centuries are in Rome and he liked this one which has a 4th century apartment, 16th century building and then a 12th century building and a 20th century building.. I do not have more information as that is what he said in the clip and moved along... Thanks

Glad you to hear you take notes. Even better to hear you are going to ask the instructor. If I could help with an answer to the inquiry I would. Hoped you received the detailed PM I sent when you posted about carrying a camera and tripod. If you find out where this road is located will you let us know.

There are so many possibilities, especially in the ancient city of Rome. Take, for example, the area around the Pantheon. The Pantheon was built more than 1800 years ago. This magnificant building still stands as a reminder of the great Roman empire. Surrounding the Pantheon are apartments, famous fountains and restaurants. However, it's just one example of what your instructor may be referencing. If, and when, you get the answer, come back and tell us.

I'm trying to think of areas likely to have buildings from 4th century that would be occupied as apartments. My best guesses would be Teatro Marcello area (which would include Jewish Getto and area near Bocca della Verita) and Trastevere, but it could be almost anywhere in central Rome. If you find out, please let us know - now curious.

Sowmya, I'm glad you're interested enough to ask the question. As posted, there are many places like this. Since you asked for other recommendations, I suggest looking at the Teatro di Marcello, which was a Roman theatre but is now filled with very sought-after apartments, just to see the layering and recycling of monuments. One building that comes to mind is the church of San Clemente, which was restored in the 1700s, renovated in the middle ages, has early Christian mosaics from the 4th century in a church originally built in the 1st or 2nd century over an even older temple to Mithras.
