Place to stay in Venice

We are going to Venice on July 11th on short notice. I need a place to stay for 2 nights. I would like easy access from the airport since we will have alot of luggage (carrying supplies for service work in Africa the following week). I also need to be able to take a train from Venice to Rome on the last day. Does anyone have a suggestion on a decent place to stay that is easy access from the airport and easy access to the train station. Many thanks in advance!

I'm going to disagree with STeve.

Stay in Venice proper. There are several hotels in the vicinity of Piazzale Roma and the train station that would work. Part of the magic of Venice is being ine the city after all the daytrippers leave. Only as a last resort would I stay elsewhere.

What does a lot of luggage mean? Will your group be able to manage your luggage by yourself?

Steve - If I stay by the airport where would I actually catch the train to Rome? Do I need to go to the train station to do this or can it be done from the airport?

Ron- Good point on the nighttime in Venice. So question for you is how do I get from the airport to the area you mentioned the most cost efficiently? By alot of luggage I mean 1 carry on and two pieces of luggage each so it is manageable by ourselves we just don't want to be toting stuff all over.

Thanks!

We stayed in Mestre at Outlet Sweet Venice. I know. Crazy name, but google it or check it out on TripAdvisor. If it's available, the owner will meet you at the airport for a reasonable fee and transport you and your luggage. I'm sure he'd also help you to the Mestre train station or arrange a cab. It's about a 5 euro cab fare from b and b to station in Mestre where you can catch fast train to Rome. You can walk it easily but if you have lots of luggage, cabs are an option. Advantages of staying in Mestre versus Venice are much lower prices, and bus rides into Venice are only 10 min or so. Very easy, and owner of Outlet S Venice provides great service and assistance. Also, look at the space you will have--big roomy suite versus small rooms in Venice.

I don't usually disagree with Steve BUT - In this case I must! Having just returned from Venice for about my 28th time I have to say that Ron is spot on - The majic is being in Venice - Not at the airport or some remote location. Enjoy it for what it is and deal with the baggage.

Ciao, Greg

Piazzale Roma is the area in Venice where the traffic must stop. It is basically across the Grand Canal from the train station, which is now reachable from there by a new pedestrian bridge.

It is also the farthest from most of the major sites in Venice but the area would give you hotels without having to schlep too far and without going on a vaporetto.

The easiest and probably the cheapest for you from the airport would be to take the blue ATVO express bus to P le Roma. It is set up like a long haul bus. It has luggage storage under the passenger compartment that is accessed from outside.

After you leave the arrivals hall, you would turn left at the first cross hall and purchase tickets there. The bus stop is directly in front of the terminal. Cost is 3 euro.
