After the Best of Eastern Europe Tour this September I am planning to visit Venice and Milan as a solo traveler. Thanks to this blog I found a place for Venice and I still need a recommendation for Milan. Since I don't know this city I would like to know of a safe area, not too far from the convent o place where the Leonardo's Last Supper original can be seen. I checked AirBnB as somebody recommended in this blog but it is very difficult to choose since I am not familiar with the city. As a solo female traveler I want to be very cautious. Thanks a lot.
You can either stay in the vicinity of Milano Centrale or closer to the Duomo and Milano Cadorna. I'm also a solo traveller and prefer hotels for a variety of reasons. Some hotels close to Milano Centrale that you could consider are Hotel Garda or Hotel Berna. If you'd rather stay closer to the Duomo, you could try the Hotel London.
If you're heading for the airport after your stay in Milan, travelling to the airport from Milano Cadorna is slightly faster than from Centrale. Getting to The Last Supper should be shorter and easier from the Cadorna station, so you could use a Taxi or perhaps even walk.....
We've stayed at Hotel Grand Duca di York and, it certainly felt safe. Staff was quite nice and it had a good breakfast buffet. Location was good for walking to most of the main attractions.
We stayed at Hotel Madison very close to Centrale (had to leave very early for the airport on departure day) and enjoyed it very much. It's not close to Santa Maria delle Grazie but being close to the train station was more important to us.
On a girl's trip with my 2 sisters and niece we were flying out of Linate and stayed at the above-mentioned Hotel Berna. It was great and an easy walk from Milano Centrale. Breakfast buffet was awesome!! Would stay here again.
I've also stayed at the Hotel Berna - great hotel.
Another great place right across the street from the Berna
Garda Hotel. (I am also a solo female traveler)
They are both only a couple blocks from the Centrale Train Station and
huge metro station on the corner towards the train station.
If you are going to stay in Milan for a few days and want to walk around the city and sightsee, I would not stay near Milano Centrale... there are much nicer areas, like near Cadorna, near the Navigli, around Brera... look for those areas.
Staying near Centrale is useful if you have an early train to catch and are in Milan just as a stop to get somewhere else, otherwise it\s better to look at other nicer areas.
We stayed at the Lancaster Hotel in Milan earlier this month. It's very near the beautiful Sempione Park, and not too far from the Santa Maria delle Grazie - where the Last Supper is. The cost was very reasonable; for the nights we were there we paid €69 for a weekend night, and €99 for weeknights. A nice breakfast is included, and the staff were very helpful.
The only downside is it's not very close to the metro stops, about a 15 minute walk. There are closer tram and bus stops, but it was harder to find information about tram and bus lines.
