We will be arriving in Rome around noon on a Thursday and will be spending Friday and Saturday night in Cinque Terre. We thought we would take the train and head part way to CT so the train ride wouldn't be so long going direct after a long plane ride. We were thinking maybe Lucca would be a good place to spend the night. Any suggestions or ideas? Also a suggestion on a hotel would be great.
Mark, you could take the train to Pisa. That way you could get your obligatory photo holding up the tower and have a place to spend the night. The tower and basilica are the only things to see in Pisa anyway.
Note that if you take a Eurostar out of Rome towards Florence, it's a non-stop. It's a 95-min train journey. That means if you want to stay overnight in Siena, you have to go to Florence first and then backtrack on a bus or train to Siena and then do the same back in the morning. Lucca is not bad as it's on the way to the CT.
Siena and the Tuscan hill towns are spectacular but one other crazy option would to continue north and spend the night in Bologna. It's an hour further north on the Eurostar with no train changes.

The next day, take the train to the CT. About 3.5hrs and 3 train changes to Riomaggiore. It would take this long and as many train changes from Siena. It takes 2.5hrs and 2 train changes from Florence. Lucca to Riomaggiore is 97-min and 1 or 2 train changes.
Sienna!!!!
