Does anyone have experience parking at the Villa Borghese parking in Rome? Or a better suggestion of where to park outside the ZTL (or near the ring road?) for 3 to 4 days while in Rome? We are renting a car for a month from Frankfurt, and it is cheaper for us to keep the car for the entire period rather than drop it off (one way rental) get another car etc. We plan to take public transportation to the hotel in central Rome.
Thanks! Is Villa Borghese safe. Unfortunately, we have a car and must park it somewhere. We have no problem parking in another town and taking a train/metro in to Rome but want to know a reasonably safe bet on parking. Thanks again!
We also rented a car at the Frankfurt airport two yrs. ago. While we were in Rome, we parked the car for free in a public lot at the train station in Orvieto. Just make sure you don't have any tour books/maps visible. We also bought an Italian newspaper and put it on the seats. By the way, the parking lot is located down below the train station. It took us a while to find it. Then, it's an easy 1 hr. train ride into Rome. The trains run every hour. If you want to enjoy a quaint, small hilltown, Orvieto is great. Have fun!
We left our car in Orvieto and rode the train in to Rome. We stayed in Rome for 3 nights. Parking was free and the car was still there when we got back :) We took everything with us and left some newspapers sitting on the back seat. The free parking lot is right in front of the train station.
Edited to say:
WOW-how did I miss Denise's post right above mine. (almost Identical but posted an hour earlier) Well, at least you know it worked for 2 people.
I hope that you will be insuring the car FULLY if you are going to park it for several days unattended. You absolutely won't need a car in ROME or for most of Italy for that matter. Personally, I would take the hit in the pocketbook and return the car before I would spend extra for a car rental that I wouldn't need, not to mention the parking fees and insurance. How much will it cost you in deductible if the car is stolen or vandalized??
Thanks everyone for your help! I did some additional research and located parking "terminal Gionocolo" which is a 24 hour guarded parking garage near the Vatican for about 22 Euros per 24 hours. Hopefully can reach it using GPS!www.parcheggi.it/scheda.php?idpark=1005
Also Re. train vs car we researched pricing/ train passes/ individual tickets etc. but for our family of 4 seems significantly cheaper to lease the car, even including gas, tolls, insurance, parking etc. I'm sure it would be different for only 2 persons, or if we were only going to one country, etc. I would have prefered trains.
If you are renting from an international chain in Frankfurt, maybe they have a location in Rome as well where you can safely leave the car?
