I would rather not bring a few travel essentials on the plane, for space. I wanted to see if there is a place close to the SM Novella train station we could pick up some of these items? Compact travel umbrella, sunscreen, and travel size hair products (conditioner & styling products).

The staff at your hotel should be able to direct you to nearby stores where you can buy those items. There are a number of Farmacia's in the vicinity of Firenze SMN, and you should be able to get sunscreen and hair products there (although I'm not sure if they will be "travel size").

There is a big and cheap cosmetic store (Genet) half way in via dell'Albero. But finding travel size products in Italy may be not so easy.
The best travel umbrellas are at the Marini travel gear shop just in front of Genet. Marini now is run by Chinese people but their selection of first quality gear seems to have remained the same.

My experience has been that if you don't see anything small enough displayed, ask. Sometimes the small sizes are kept in drawers or behind the counter.

Look for shops called Limoni.
You can look on Google Street View.
They sell every kind of toiletries and sundries.
Pharmacies generally don't have a huge selection of shampoos, soaps, creams, etc.
There are also "Euro" shops in the centre of town that sell bits and pieces.
BTW: they are good places to get plug adaptors too.
I've never seen travel-sized bottles of anything in Italy.
