We are driving from Rome to Sorrento and want to make a quick stop for pizza in Naples. The pizzerias in Steve's book sound perfect but I'm concerned that they won't be accessible by car. Any suggestions?
Why not just wait until Sorrento? I’d do a Google, Tripadvisor and/or Yelp search for pizza recommendations there. Driving in Naples is pretty harrowing especially near the better known pizza restaurants.
You could park at Capodicino airport, then take the Alibus (€5) to Napoli Centrale. Then a 1/2 hour walk or a metro line 1 to Museo. Then an 8 min walk to Sorbillo.
Agree with Becky, don't even think about driving in Naples... lines in the pavement are mere suggestions drivers are impatient and scooters have the right of way. My daughter has lived in the area 15 yrs and she scares the begeeses out of me.
But I love this chaotic city!
Imo thin-crust wood-fired Roman pizza is better than Naples pizza. Bypass Naples and eat pizza at Baffetto near Piazza Navona (and not at its sister pizzeria Baffetto 2 near Campo de' Fiori).
Whether you stop for pizza in Naples or not, be sure to also try Pizzeria da Franco in Sorrento on Corso Italia. Hole in the wall joint, lots of locals, BEST pizza I have ever eaten. Four years after our first trip to Sorrento, we returned and popped into the same restaurant, knowing it couldn't possibly be as good as we remembered. But it was!
Yeah, it’s not worth the agony. Rick Steve’s actually recommends some good Napoli style pizza in Rome that I found on par with Naples, check the guidebook. Just to note, I enjoyed it, but Pizzeria da Franco in Sorrento in Sorrento-style pizza. It’s decidedly different from Naples-style pizza. If you’re really looking to enjoy a regional specialty that isn’t reproduced elsewhere then you need to get some pastries!
Do you live near a large city in the US? I say this because you can get a pizza as good as in Naples in places that are certified by the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana. Look at site below and see if there are places near you. Don't go out of your way to drive to Naples just for pizza. I've had Neopolitan pizza in the US in many cities: Pasadena, CA; Salt Lake City; Arlington, VA; etc.

Do not drive in Naples. Parking at airport is a good idea, taxi to city center,or take a train to Naples from Sorrento. I have never eaten a pizza that compares with those in Naples. Out of this world! Hard to describe the perfection.
I'm not sure you can do a quick stop in Naples.. But I second hcotta's comment, Da Franco in Sorrento is great. If we make our way back to Sorrento, we will go there again for sure.
Agnes, Thanks for the link. I was happy to learn there are several places near my home.
I am an intrepid driver. Last year I drove all along the Amalfi Coast, but after spending 5 days in Naples as a pedestrian, my recommendation is DO NOT drive into Naples. In other cities, traffic laws and signals are suggestions to drivers, in Naples they are pretty much ignored completely. Plus there are way too many cars in the city, so you it's slow going and parking is hard to find..
Last year I had the best pizza in Venice, and the pizza in Salerno and Trastevere (Rome) were every bit as good, maybe even better, than the places Rick recommends in Naples.
Lines on pavenments? Surely there should only be pedestrians?????
Not to denigrate the pizza in Naples, but it cannot be good enough, even if you got it free, to make it worth the bother to drive into Naples to a pizza place, find parking and then resume your trip.
I picked up a rental car at the Naples train station on my way to Sorrento. Did not see an empty parking space anywhere on my way out of town.
Get your pizza fix elsewhere
Panetteria-Pizzeria Franco. We ate lunch here one day while we were in Sorrento. The pizza was excellent.
The Pizza is good enough to WALK, DRIVE or CRAWL to Naples for. We ate Pizza all over Italy from Torino all the way to the far south of the Salento (the tip of the Italian boot heel) and NO WHERE was the pizza half as good. We just came from there and I have some observations:
We spent 41 days in Italy, a month and eleven days. I may have some perspective on this.
I didnt find the drivers in Naples to be that bad and in actual fact The minute we stepped off the curb cars halted for us, you need to be observant but not afraid. I would drive in Naples, but realize its not for everybody.
We stayed right next to the Train Station (Actually a pretty good place to stay) and the Pizza places are a 15 minute walk from there.
The Pizza place I prefer is actually RS second choice. Pizzeria Trianon. I think it is better Pizza...but by a small margin. What is Better is the Choices, Access, seating, service and entire ambiance.
Consider this: Leave your car at a suburban station along the Circumvesuviana train line that heads to Sorrento. Take that train into Naples. Walk from the station have lunch or dinner, enjoy Naples, (one of my VERY favorite cities in Italy) And return to your car.
Do not be put off by the naysayers of traffic doom and those that claim pizza is just as good elsewhere. You can do this. And I guarantee you wont regret it.
Yes, Agnes, thanks for the link. I found a pizzeria that is very close to where I live. Yum, still remember the delicious pizza I ate in Naples.
aarthurperry, thanks for the vote of confidence! My husband was game so we drove right into Naples, navigated to Trianon, parked on the street and walked the 1/4 mile to the pizzeria. My husband actually loved driving in Naples. He thought it was fun. There didn't seem to be any lights or signs at intersections, mopeds were everywhere, but somehow everyone seems to get where they need to and no one gets hurt. The restaurant was great and we enjoyed the pizza. I don't know that it was the best pizza in the world but you can't beat the experience Thanks to all who offered their advice.. If you want to eat pizza in Naples, my advice would be to give it a shot! As I told my husband, if it's a disaster, we get right back on the highway and drive away.
Aarthurperry, I totally agree! Good pizza all over Italy and US but nothing compares to real pizza in Naples. Out of this world and so cheap too.
