Pitfalls and Surprises of Christmas Week in Rome

My family (all adults) is considering a trip to Rome for Christmas, and would probably arrive on December 24th or 25th. Can we expect any restaurants to be open on either day? After the 25th, will most museums and tourist attractions be open?

We would appreciate any information on pitfalls or happy surprises we might experience in Rome between Christmas and New Years. Suggestions for what to do on Christmas Day would be especially welcome.

My wife and I did Christmas in Rome year before last and encountered no pitfalls. Attractions are open - after Christmas day - and the markets are still active.

Retsurants are open on Christmas and there is the usual crowd at Piazza Navonna.

Last year on Christmas Day we did outdoor activities like wander around the Forum and Piazza Novana, plus went into every church that was open. Make sure you check the website of each site or attraction to be sure of its particular holiday hours and closings. Many things were closed on the 26th, so plan your sightseeing accordingly. We thought we had missed seeing the Pope, but when we visited St.Peter's on the 26th, we were delighted to see him come out of his little window and address the crowd. What a thrill! (and we're not even Catholic!)
