I went online to book tickets for climbing the tower, and it is asking for my passport number? Is that safe? The other option is identity card- could I enter a driver's license number or something? This seems to be the opapisa official site, just curious.
This struck me as odd, too. But, I figured that the risk of it being a problem paled in comparison to having to wait in line!
Yes, you are required to give some form of "ID" and for non-Italians the alternative is your passport. I carried mine with me when I bought tickets for friends... but when I showed them my email print-out they never asked for my passport! Probably just depends on who waits on you!

yes i did reservations recently and i did not think much of this request...i guess this is the only type of universal id that they can check to see if we are indeed the ones who purchased the reservations...
You either have to give your passport # or your codice fiscale (identity number) which in Italy is similar to our social security number...
