On our way from Monterossa to Siena, we would like to stop in Pisa for lunch and to see the leaning tower. We can either spend over 4 hours in Pisa between trains, or about 2 1/2 hours depending on which trains we catch. I prefer the 2 1/2 hour stopover time but will that be enough time to see the leaning tower have a bite to eat and get back on the train? Thanks...Pam
what day of the week, and do you want to climb the tower or tour the church or baptistery?
Pamela,
You may be able to see the tower & the cathedral in a couple of hours, but if you plan to climb to the top of the tower & add lunch to the equation, you may be more relaxed with 4 hours.
Since you will likely have luggage, you may leave it at the train station @ 'deposito bagagli' (Pisa Centrale): http://www.depositobagaglipisa.it/
If you plan to climb the tower, you may want to make advance reservations, so you don't have to wait too long:http://www.opapisa.it/en/home-page.html
EDIT: Keep in mind that you may have to wait in line to drop off / pick up your luggage.
If you plan to have lunch in Pisa, be aware that most of the restaurants near the Campo dei Miracoli are terrible. Perhaps someone will have a suggestion for someplace in town on the way to the train station.
I'm not sure of the location of the train station but we stopped at Pisa last week on our way from cinque Terre to San Gimignano and our "quick stop" turned into four hours very easily.
I have basically the same question but have even less time. I basically want to depart train, drop bags, see leaning tower and surrounding area, snap some photos and then head on to Rome. Is 1 hour and 40 minutes from arrival in Pisa to departure for Rome possible to do this or should I scrape the idea to see the tower? Thanks
Similar route planning on our trip, we're leaving Monterosso/CT to depart out of Pisa airport. Figuring three passengers/rail tickets and required connection to second train plus two taxi fares (one from station to accommodate stop at Leaning Tower, another from there onto PSA/flight) we decided to book a car service. It's slightly more in terms of cost, but will take liability of work stoppage out of play (esp important on getaway day) and enable us to arrive directly from point-A to point-C, with desired photo op (point-B, Leaning Tower) en route. It also allows us to tailor a more reasonable time at Leaning Tower, not beholden to train schedule/s. Worth looking into, IMO, depending on how many passengers you have... one fee versus multiple fares, with much more flexibility.
