Pisa Parking near Leaning Tower, but out of ZTL zones

I have been researching the ZTL zones in Pisa and there doesn't seem to be any clear information on the exact boundaries (not that I can understand anyway!). I would simply like to come off the Autostrada and park near the tower for about 45 minutes, either in a free or paid lot. I have been reading about tourists who have rented a car and driven into Pisa around the tower, but then returned home to receive a steep fine/ticket weeks later for driving into the ZTL (restricted traffic zones) without realizing it. Does anyone have specific directions to a parking area near the tower that is definitely outside of the ZTL? I am surprised that there is no mention of these zones in the Rick Steves Italy book. RS references "free parking just outside the town wall a block from the Tower". at 'Parcheggio Pietrasantina'. However, when I looked up this particular carpark on a Pisa website, it showed this carpark at a location about 1 km from the tower. If anyone could provide any assistance, it would be much appreciated!

I can link you to a picture of the ZTL sign but I cannot find a map of the ZTL zones.

CLICK HERE to see an article on ZTL along with a picture of what the sign looks like.

Your rental car company will rat you out to the police should the camera get a picture of your license plate.

We had no trouble finding a spot on the side of the road near the tower. It was easy off and on the autostrada and relatively well signed.

It was in October, probably earlier in the morning, so I'm not sure you can expect the same when you visit.
