We will be doing an overnight in Pisa in October. Seeing the Leaning tower in the afternoon. Wondering if we should stay in Pisa or the surrounding areas for dinner or make the 30 min drive to Lucca for better dinner options? It would be more simplistic to stay around Pisa but we are okay to drive to Lucca if needed. Thanks!
My wife and I are a little biased, we love Lucca. A few suggestions:
Osteria da Pasquale (our favorite)
Trattoria Canuleia
Ristorante all'olivo
Trattoria Gigi
Reservations would be needed at all of them.
Lucca is a much more enjoyable city than Pisa.
Canuleia and Osteria da Pasquale were memorably good meals for us last fall, and I love Lucca.
Lucca for sure. Pisa is a one and done deal for us - not much to do or see in Pisa for us compared to the other towns.
Pisa is a very enjoyable place with much to see along with the Piazza dei Miracoli, it just takes a modicum of research. Lucca may be prettier overall, but the overcrowding reports are becoming the rule. I've had excellent meals in Pisa and in Lucca, as well as mediocre meals in both. Look at Osteria dei Cavalieri near Piazza dei Cavalieri or Osteria Vecchia Noce in nearby Vicopisano, where you can also see Brunelleschi's Fortress.
We loved our 6 nights in Pisa and found plenty to see there and several good places to eat --- however usually we eat lunches. But we enjoyed dinners at Osteria del Tumi, perhaps biased because it was about 12 feet from the door of our apartment. We would sure hate to drive anywhere to eat dinner, no matter how good the restaurant was.
