We are planning a stop in Pisa on our way from Florence to Genoa just to take a picture of the leaning tower. We're finding it confusing on whether the square, where the leaning tower is, is open at all hours or if it's only open for the tour hours of 9am to 7pm? We are early birds that are really just looking to stop and take a picture of the Tower of Pisa and not take part in anything else, preferably as early as possible.
We hopped of the train and took a local bus to take a picture of the tower. We then took a bus back to the train. The whole adventure took manybe an hour. Sorry I can't remember the bus number (hopefully someone else knows). I don't remember any gate to the square.
Unless something has changed, as I remember from a couple of years ago there is no control on access to the square or plaza. It is just a big open area. You could easily walk in from a variety of different sides. However, with all of the recent security concerns access to the square may be limited.
It's a public square that is open 24/7.
Cars are not allowed however. Traffic is restricted in the Piazza, so you need to park elsewhere and walk in.
Roberto is correct. It is not open to traffic. Not even a little. Especially not for a motor home with French license plates. At midday. Don't even try. The police were not amused. Not even a little.
