Pisa from Florence

On our upcoming trip, ware planning to stop in Pisa on our way out of Florence to Rome. We figure with RS walking tour of an hour to the complex, where we could spend another hour or two walking around there and then take a cab back yo the train and continue to Rome
Any thoughts?

You will probably have to back track to Florence to get the fast train. The coastal railway is not high speed and generally takes longer than going back to Florence to catch the fast train. There are a few FrecciaBianca trains that run along the coast and are faster, but they are infrequent so try to time your visit to catch one of those (there is one at 2.07pm which should allow for a few hours visit in Pisa). Unless of course you don't mind the longer train ride through the coast. Not much to see though. The railway runs at least a couple of miles in the interior so you'll be able to see the sea only south of Livorno for a few miles, and then again near Civitavecchia/Santa Marinella for a few more miles.

Thanks. I saw that and it appeared that the coastal route was similar timewise, maybe 15 minutes longer. Anyway, not overly keen about doubling back, so it may have some bearing as to whether we even go to Pisa. We have a while to change our minds 100 times.
