Pisa and Pompeii

We are traveling from Milan to Florence & cannot decide whether we should stop in Pisa on the way or spend the extra time in Florence. Also, we have an extra day in Rome at the end of our trip. Is Pompeii completely out of the picture as a day trip? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Pisa is not really "on the way" to Florence. It's a bit out of the way. Trenitalia shows that its a 4.0hr. journey from Milan via Genoa. You can go Milan/Florence in 2hrs 10min on the high-speed and then a separate train from Florence/Pisa that will take just over an hour. The Leaning Tower, which I suspect you want to visit, is a 30-minute walk in and a 30-minute walk out.

Pompei is doable from Rome. First, its about 90 minutes on the high-speed from Rome to Naples. Then, you go downstairs in the Naples-Garabaldi train station and pick up the private Circumvesuviana train to the Pompei-Scavi stop. It's 36 minutes from Naples.

Is Pisa worth it? That question always gets some interesting discussions here.

This is one of them.
